Auxin transport regulation through dynamic efflux carrier phosphorylation
Auxin transport regulation through dynamic efflux carrier phosphorylation
Auxin flux, facilitated by polarly localized PIN auxin efflux carriers, controls a plethora of developmental processes in plants. The AGCVIII kinases D6PK and PID phosphorylate PINs at conserved serines and activate PIN-mediated auxin efflux. Additionally, phosphorylation by PID, but not D6PK, promotes PIN polarity changes. Here, I examine the dynamics of PIN1 phosphorylation in the context of PIN1 activation and polarity control. I show that PIN1 phosphorylation occurs at apical and basal plasma membranes. I argue that PIN1 phosphorylation indicates auxin efflux activity, rather than acting to control polarity.
