Saurios como predadores de ectoparásitos de aves guaneras

Abstract

Las altas densidades de las colonias favorecen el rápido contagio de ectopárasitos en las poblaciones de aves guaneras, destacando la garrapata Ornitodoros amblus, que en algunos casos llega a causar la muerte de los pichones. La lagartija Microlophus peruvianus ha sido introducida en las islas guaneras con la intención de reducir las poblaciones de garrapatas. En el presente estudio se observa que existe una predación sobre ectoparásitos por parte de las poblaciones de saurios en los tres lugares muestreados (Isla Lobos de tierra, La Vieja y Punta Coles), principalmente sobre la garrapata O. amblus, que constituye siempre la presa principal, siendo también consumidos en menor proporción de malófagos "piojos" y dlpteros Hippoboscidae "moscas chatas". De las tres especies de saurios estudiadas, M. peruvianus es la que consume mayor cantidad de garrapatas por lo que sería la especie más indicada para utilizar como controlador biológico de garrapatas en aves guaneras.
