Laboratory Test of a Full-Scale Soil-Steel Box-Type Culvert under Road Loads

Abstract

Corrugated steel culverts are increasingly used in road and railway projects as an alternative solution to small bridges and tunnels. This paper describes full-scale static tests of a corrugated steel box-type culvert 1.42 m high with a span of 3.55 m. Dimensions of the corrugated sheet were 150×50 mm with a thickness of 5.0 mm. Two concrete strip foundations were laid under each end of the arch. The structure was tested under different standardised (Polish Standard PN-85/S-10030) and over-standardised configurations of the road loads and various soil covers (from 0.6 m to 0.0 m). Deformations and strains of the steel structure were measured during tests. In order to specify displacements and stresses in the steel structure, three inductive gauges and twenty two strain gauges were installed on the inside surface of the culvert. In addition, earth pressure around the steel structure and strip foundations was measured by earth pressure cells. The presented test was carried out at the Road and Bridge Research Institute (RBRI) Wroclaw Branch − Poland for Via-Con Company, a Norwegian culvert producer. Several full-scale tests have been performed in the field to validate the long-term performance and great load bearing capacity of these structures, but not very many structures have been tested under laboratory controlled conditions at a test facility like the one in Poland. Results of such tests carried out at RBRI have been presented in several papers [Kunecki, 5–19], [Korusiewicz, Kunecki, 573–576], [Kunecki, Kubica, 103–112], [Veslestad, Korusiewicz, Wysokowski, 215–221].
