Microphytobenthos North Adriatic-Gulf of Trieste, LTER time-series
KC Haps bottom corer, 13 cm internal diameter. The sampled layer consists of the upper 5 mm of the sediment which has been homogenized. Monthly sampling from 05/2002 to 07/2005. Samples were fixed with Ca(HCO3)2-buffered formaldehyde (0.8% final concentration) and cell abundance and species composition of microphytobenthos were estimated according to Utermöhl’s method (1958), using an inverted microscope equipped with phase contrast, at 200-320-400x final magnifications. Data are expressed as cell per cm3 sediment.
Regular monitoring of microphytoplankton abundance and community composition has been carried out with a monthly frequency in the Gulf of Trieste, from 05/2002 to 07/2005.
