Association between SOD2 T-9C and MTHFR C677T polymorphisms and longevity: a study in Jordanian population

Abstract

Le vieillissement chez les animaux est associé à un stress oxydatif élevé du corps, qui pourrait affecter la sensibilité et l'apparition de maladies liées à l'âge, ainsi que la durée de vie ultérieure. Par conséquent, les gènes qui modulent le stress oxydatif pourraient jouer un rôle dans la détermination de la longévité. Dans cette étude, nous avons examiné si le pool de gènes pertinent pour les polymorphismes SOD2-9T/C et MTHFR 677C/T change à mesure que la population jordanienne vieillit. Les polymorphismes ont été génotypés chez 130 sujets âgés (57 femelles et 73 mâles, âge moyen : 90,01 ans) et 135 sujets témoins jeunes (67 femelles et 68 mâles, âge moyen : 33,43 ans). Aucune différence significative n'a été observée dans les fréquences des génotypes et des allèles des variants des gènes SOD2 et MTHFR examinés entre le groupe des personnes âgées et les jeunes témoins (P > 0,05), ni lorsque chaque sexe était considéré séparément (P > 0,05). Les polymorphismes des gènes SOD2-9T/C et MTHFR 677C/T ne semblent pas être importants dans la population jordanienne pour le phénotype de longévité.

El envejecimiento en animales se asocia con un alto estrés oxidativo corporal, que podría afectar la susceptibilidad y la aparición de enfermedades relacionadas con la edad, y la vida posterior. Por lo tanto, los genes que modulan el estrés oxidativo podrían desempeñar un papel en la determinación de la longevidad. En este estudio, investigamos si el acervo genético relevante para los polimorfismos SOD2-9T/C y MTHFR 677C/T cambia a medida que la población jordana envejece. Los polimorfismos se genotipificaron en 130 sujetos ancianos (57 mujeres y 73 hombres, edad media: 90.01 años) y 135 sujetos de control jóvenes (67 mujeres y 68 hombres, edad media: 33.43 años). No se encontraron diferencias significativas en el genotipo y las frecuencias alélicas de las variantes de los genes SOD2 y MTHFR examinadas entre el grupo de ancianos y los controles jóvenes (P > 0.05), ni cuando cada género se consideró por separado (P > 0.05). Los polimorfismos de los genes SOD2-9T/C y MTHFR 677C/T no parecen ser importantes en la población jordana para el fenotipo de longevidad.

Aging in animals is associated with high body oxidative stress, which might affect susceptibility and onset of age-related diseases, and the subsequent life span. Therefore, genes that modulate oxidative stress might play a role in determining longevity. In this study, we investigated whether the gene pool relevant to the SOD2-9T/C and MTHFR 677C/T polymorphisms changes as the Jordanian population ages. Polymorphisms were genotyped in 130 elderly subjects (57 females and 73 males, mean age: 90.01 years) and 135 young control subjects (67 females and 68 males, mean age: 33.43 years). No significant differences were found in the genotype and allele frequencies of examined SOD2 and MTHFR gene variants between the elderly group and young controls (P > 0.05), nor when each gender was considered separately (P > 0.05). SOD2-9T/C and MTHFR 677C/T gene polymorphisms do not seem to be important in Jordanian population for longevity phenotype.
