Abstract

O Herbário Lauro Pires Xavier foi iniciado em 1938, tendo como origem a coleção particular do Dr. Lauro Pires Xavier. Na década de oitenta o herbário passou a integrar a rede do Projeto Flora CNPq, o que deu um grande impulso ao seu desenvolvimento. À partir de 1997, passou a ser o herbário de referência para o Projeto Flora Paraibana, apoiado pelo CNPq. O herbário Lauro Pires Xavier é registrado no Index Herbariorum com o acrônimo JPB e conta atualmente com cerca de 43.000 mil exsicatas distribuídas principalmente entre Angiospermas, Algas e Fungos. Este material tem como procedência principal o estado da Paraíba, estando representados também outros estados do Nordeste e algumas regiões do país na quais pesquisadores do Departamento estiveram coletando. Além disso, temos em nosso acervo doações oriundas de coleções com as quais mantemos intercâmbio científico, particularmente material das famílias Rubiaceae, Solanaceae e Rhamnaceae que recebemos para identificação.
