Founded by 1911 as the herbarium of the California Horticultural Commission, the Botany Lab and Herbarium of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (Plant Pest Diagnostics Center) serves as the plant diagnostic and identification service for California, and is the repository for the state collection of noxious weed and agricultural plant specimens. Size of collection: ca. 60,000 plant specimens. Notable collections include those of CDFA and County Agricultural Commissioner staff, M. K. Bellue, T. C. Fuller, G. Douglas Barbe, G. F. Hrusa, D. G Kelch, and G. L. Stout. The Gilbert L. Stout Plant Disease Herbarium (CDA-BPS) has ca. 10,000 unaccessioned specimens, integration into CDA is in progress.
