Los principales sitios de anidación han sido identificados en EL SALVADOR y NICARAGUA con anidaciones esporádicas en otras áreas incluyendo MEXICO. Se estima que el número total de nidos cada año está entre 450 y 500 en todos los sitios de anidación.<br><br>En el pacifico Mexicano los sitios principales de anidación de Carey están en los Estados de Nayarit y Jalisco, que son los lÃmites al norte de anidación de las Carey del Pacifico Oriental. Pocos nidos son registrados cada año (4 a 15 nidos) pero tortugas Carey Juvenil son reportadas continuamente por pescadores y buzos. Carey adultos son reportadas ocasionalmente.<br><br>Nuestro proyecto pretende incrementar la conciencia y comprensión de estas tortugas en peligro crÃtico a través del rastreo satelital. Este rastreo o seguimiento nos ayudara a identificar sitios de alimentación claves y zonas de movimientos de las tortugas Carey. Esperamos que al facilitar que los habitantes de las comunidades locales asistan a las liberaciones de tortugas Carey con rastreadores satelitales crearemos futuros conservacionistas para beneficio de las Carey y otras tortugas marinas en nuestra área.<br><br>English:<br><br>East Pacific hawksbill turtles are considered one of the most endangered sea turtle populations in the world.<br><br>Principal nesting sites have been identified in El Salvador and Nicaragua with sporadic nesting in other areas including Mexico. It is estimated that between all known nesting sites only 450 to 500 nests are laid each year.<br><br>In the Mexican Pacific the main areas for hawksbill nesting are Nayarit and Jalisco states, which mark the northern nesting limit for the East Pacific hawksbill population. Few nests are registered each year (4-15 nests) however juvenile hawksbills are often reported by fishers and divers. Adult hawksbills are also occasionally reported.<br><br>Our project aims to increase understanding and awareness of these critically endangered turtles via tracking. Tracking will help us identify key foraging habitat and ranges for hawksbill turtles. We hope that by allowing local communities to attend the releases of tagged turtles we will create future conservation advocates for hawksbills and other sea turtles in our region.
