L'inventaire a officiellement été lancé en 1978 et s'est terminé en 1984, sauf pour les Mammifères marins. Il s'est également poursuivi dans les départements ayant fait l'objet d'enquêtes complémentaires : deux atlas départementaux ont ainsi été publiés en 1988 et 1991, pour la Loire-Atlantique et la Charente-Maritime respectivement (sous la direction de MC Saint Girons). Une démarche d'actualisation a été engagée par le MNHN et la SFEPM, et elle doit aboutir à la publication d'un nouvel atlas des mammifères de France. Le premier volume concernera les mammifères marins de métropole et d'outre-mer
