Abstract

Se ha demostrado que tanto lagunas costeras como estuarios constituyen ecosistemas de gran importancia ecológica. Son exportadores de materia orgánica en descomposición que enriquece las aguas oceánicas adyacentes. Esto se debe básicamente al papel que juegan en estos sistemas la producción primaria. El funcionamiento de las comunidades que habitan en estos ecosistemas depende del nicho de todas las especies presentes en la comunidad. Sin embargo, la importancia de tales especies, por lo general no ha sido evaluada y tampoco se ha determinado la composición de especies, sobre todo en litorales mexicanos. Es indudable que deben tomarse medidas para la conservación de este tipo de ecosistemas, ya que albergan comunidades ecológicamente importantes; es por esto que se plantea la necesidad de conocer con precisión los integrantes de las comunidades y en particular, aquellos que determinan su diversidad desde el punto de vista ecológico. Así pues, se deben estudiar los productores primarios como mangles, macroalgas, fitoplancton y microbentos.
