MAC herbarium - Instituto do Meio Ambiente do Estado de Alagoas - Herbário Virtual REFLORA

Abstract

The MAC Herbarium is affiliated with the Environmental Institute of the State of Alagoas (Instituto do Meio Ambiente do Estado de Alagoas - IMA/AL) and was established during the Ecological and Cultural Survey of the Mundaú-Manguaba Estuarine Lagoon Complex (PLEC) in 1979, a study of great ecological and social importancefor the state of Alagoas. The herbarium's foundation involved the participation of Dr. Dárdano de Andrade Lima, who guided the organization and identification of the first collected specimens. These specimens served as a reference for its official registration in 1981 in the Index Herbariorum, under the acronym MAC. Currently, the MAC Herbarium holds over 63,000 specimens, of which 94% are vascular plants, 2% bryophytes, and 4% marine algae and fungi, making it the most representative collection of plant species from Alagoas' various vegetation formations. A significant portion of the collection comes from Atlantic Forest, Caatinga, Restinga, and aquatic environments. The herbarium also includes eight type specimens and a didactic carpotheca with approximately 300 fruits and seeds. MAC collaborates with regional industries and the Foundation for Research Support of Alagoas (FAPEAL), providing botanical sample identification services to students and researchers in the region.
