Abstract

The UNIP Herbarium belongs to the Paulista University of Education and was officially founded in 2003, although it has existed as a reference collection for projects conducted at the institution since 1996. It holds approximately 12,000 records in its collection, comprising angiosperms, gymnosperms, pteridophytes, and bryophytes, including two holotypes and several paratypes (isoparatypes). Most of the herbarium’s specimens come from the Amazon flora, primarily collected through the Rio Negro Project, a long-term study aimed at producing plant extracts and subsequently testing their chemical activity in laboratory settings. This research focuses on the inhibition of human tumor cell growth and the effectiveness of these extracts against antibiotic-resistant bacteria commonly found in hospital environments. Officially, the project is titled "Selection, Extraction, and Identification of New Antitumor and Antibacterial Drugs from Brazilian Plants." The UNIP Herbarium also houses samples from various Brazilian biomes, including the Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, and Caatinga, as well as duplicate specimens from other botanical collections.
