Abstract

La Société des lettres, sciences et arts de l’Aveyron fut fondée, en 1836, par un groupe d’Aveyronnais qui répondit favorablement à l’initiative du conseiller général Hippolyte de Barrau, l’une des personnalités les plus érudites du département. Celui-ci fut élu président de la jeune compagnie dès qu’elle eut été officiellement agréée. Les statuts de l’époque précisaient déjà les buts et la mission que s’imposerait la Société, et le cadre des études auxquelles ses membres devraient se consacrer : archéologie, histoire, littérature, sciences et techniques, l’ensemble de ces disciplines en relation, bien évidemment, avec le Rouergue.
