As a strategy to reduce excessive drinking among students, the Dutch National Prevention Agreement promotes alcohol-free beverages, assuming a substitution effect. However, given that alcohol consumption among students remains high despite rising popularity of alcohol-free beverages, alcohol-free beverages may in fact be consumed in addition to alcoholic beverages (addition effect). Moreover, the consumption of alcohol-free beverages may also be a first step towards the consumption of alcoholic beverages (stepping-stone effect). To test the effectiveness (or harm) of the applied strategy, we will analyse our extensive longitudinal dataset on the consumption of alcoholic and alcohol-free beverages among Dutch university students.
