Wind energy and infrastructure sectors face serious sustainability challenges. Wind turbines are typically dismantled after 25 years. The blades, having excellent structural performance, but being hard to recycle, are typically sent to waste. Simultaneously, the infrastructure sector is confronted with a massive replacement challenge and strict sustainability requirements. The proposed ‘Bridges of Blades’ couple these two sectors by efficiently reusing blades to build sustainable, durable and light-weight bridges. The goal of this study is to investigate the commercial and juridical context for realising these ‘Bridges of Blades’ as developed at TU Delft.
