This ambitious nurse-led project aims to develop and implement palliative and rehabilitative services for people having chronic leg wounds, with particular focus on those at risk of having a leg amputated. Why? Because living with a chronic leg wound seriously affects all aspects of quality of life, and the patients are in risk of not only amputation but also early death. Hence, these patients can benefit from both palliative and rehabilitation services, to support them to live the lives they prefer, and simultaneously enable them to prepare for an eventual amputation and end of life – services not available today. How? The project will include: 1) a registry study, 2) a qualitative exploration of barriers to implement a palliative approach in specialist wound care, 3) implementation of a palliative service in specialist wound care, and 4) development and testing of a community based rehabilitation service.
