The COVID 19 pandemic has abruptly delayed many of the expectations for social, cultural and economic growth. Due to its transversal nature and impact on all sectors of the economy, tourism represents a privileged activity for poverty reduction and economic growth. In this context, sustainable tourism is an essential factor of opportunity and growth for countries like Angola and Cabo Verde. Cabo Verde has registered a remarkable growth in tourist activity in recent years, as it is considered a strategic sector for the country's sustainable development. However, it´s a traditional tourism based on the beach and the sea as the main attractions. Therefore, one of Cabo Verde's biggest challenge is to change from a saturated 3S tourism model (Sea, Sun and Sand) to a truly sustainable tourism model, through the diversification of the tourist offer. Angola is not an attractive tourist destination, for several reasons. Nevertheless, has excellent conditions for the exploitation of tourist activity. To achieve this objective, it will be necessary to overcome obstacles inherent to the Angolan tourism sector, such as the lack of training of many professionals and tourist operators. Tourism, like any other sector, creates risks of negative impact on the environment. The biggest problems are the excessive use of resources, pollution and aspects related to the tourist's behaviour towards the environment they visit. In this context, sustainable tourism is the only option to minimize the negative effects of traditional tourism and promote the much-needed post-pandemic economic growth, specially in Africa, where it is estimated that the tourism sector will have lost close to 50B€ since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis. In view of the above, the main objective of this project is to improve the capacity of Angola and Cabo Verde Universities to develop innovative training in the area of sustainable tourism that improves employability, promotes entrepreneurship and economic growth.
