Transformative learning through the prism of environmental sustainability

Description

The project aims to the exchange of good practices, in the field of adult education, as regards the transformative learning activated through the scientific and cultural matrix connected to decades-long investigation, mitigation and adaptation initiatives to climate change and environmental sustainability. Project activities will be implemented, taking into consideration the European cultural heritage, along with its sustainable preservation and valorization, in the perspective of social cohesion and potential to support skills development, social inclusion, critical thinking and citizens engagement. To this aim, the Partnership wants to identify and exchange good practices based on the valorization and preservation of cultural heritage as enhancement of environmental, social, cultural and economic sustainability. In fact, cultural heritage can contribute towards well-being and quality of life of communities, can help to mitigate the impacts of cultural globalization and can become an incentive for sustainable economic development. Moreover, through the project activities, the Partners want to investigate and highlight original participatory and intercultural approaches to cultural heritage, as potential sources of future educational initiatives aimed at fostering intercultural dialogue. The preservation of cultural heritage is often understood as a barrier to economic development, though various economic benefits can be generated by cultural heritage and its preservation: creation of income and jobs, job training and maintenance of craftsmanship skills, revival of city centers, heritage tourism, increase in property values, enhancement of small business et cetera. In order to implement sustainable development strategies and to improve quality of life it is essential to recognize cultural heritage as a valuable resource and development incentive. The project activities, rooted in the implementation of three transnational meeting, will target staff, educators, trainers from within Adult Education Organizations, towards the discovery of the influence and relevance of cultural heritage upon conception and implementation of strategies for sustainable development, where cultural heritage plays also the role of mitigating the trend of cultural globalization and massification. The role of cultural heritage, within the new paradigms of sustainable development, resilience and circular economy is still susceptible of new readings that can creatively support people in the development of new narratives, more participated, inclusive and cohesive. The project intends to offer an original key to understanding, to broaden and enrich the reflection on the shared sense of European cultural heritage, helping to understand how human development cannot happen without reflecting upon the ultimate purpose of lifelong learning and its power to nurture empowered, reflective, engaged and skilled citizens who can chart the way towards a safer, greener and fairer society for all. Moreover, cultural heritage is capable of attracting and uniting people beyond the cognitive, linguistic, cultural barriers. Project activities are expected to have the following impacts on participants at the Organizations’ level: - increased awareness and reinforced Organizations’ competences as regards the “transformative learning”, as the results of decades of scientific research applied to environmental sustainability, climate changes and circular economy as well as the activities and results of trans-national committees, initiatives, publication and so forth, whose outcomes have been a set of tools to educate/train, learn and act, to trigger transformation in individuals as well as communities, giving the sense of acting locally to have an impact globally (the so-called “glocal” dimension); nothing like sustainability/environment/climate changes issues let people, no matter where they live, feel as citizens of one world, of one Earth.- increased capacity to design and develop new strategies to provide services to the targeted groups - increased capacity to enrich the current services offer, with the introduction of new methods, new contents, such as the Transformative Learning Paths in Stages;- increased capacity to develop and establish cooperation with like-minded organizations from other Countries of Europe,- increased capacity to involve relevant stakeholders at local, regional, national and international levels (i.e. public authorities, companies, associations, citizens, etc.)- increased capacity to cooperate at an international dimension- Increased awareness as regards the social and educational value of European cultural heritage, especially in regards to its preservation and valorization
