<< Background >>The Horizontal priority of “Social Inclusion” has been chosen for the following reasons: YIPPEE project is clearly in line with one the overall objectives of the Erasmus+ Programme that, “Europe needs more cohesive and inclusive societies which allow citizens to play an active role in democratic life”.The lead partner, whose headquarters is located in Orkelljunga, SE, recognises, first hand, need for urgent and effective interventions to foster social inclusion and non-discrimination thus preventing racism and intolerance in a region that faces huge challenges in managing the arrival of large number of migrants some of whom are seeking protection. This view is shared by the other participating countries. The partnership was established with organizations with a wide range of experience in the field. Research on the social exclusion of migrant youth (Nordic Journal of Youth, 2010) defines Social exclusion as a two sided process as it denotes both the instances, when a person is excluded from a community or a place and denial of access to ‘outsiders’.In addition, exclusion can take the form of “othering” where migrant communities are marked out as different or not belonging. (Vestel, 2004). “Othering” can take the form of overt racism, and or structural or institutional discrimination such as special classes or projects targeted to specific groups of people (even though such strategies are often well meaning). The aim of this project is completely consistent with the chosen horizontal priority as it is focused on fostering cooperation between young Europeans and young resident refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants of the same age through an innovative methodology. Additionally, in the development phase of YIPPEE training package, youth workers and professionals from a migrant background will be included and fully involved giving their input on teamwork between EU and immigrant youth, giving them a clear stake in the process and an opportunity to become actors of change in society. This project will foster the development of new social and intercultural competences and critical thinking; it will also tackle discrimination, segregation and racism, thus contributing to prevent acts of extremism and violence. Furthermore YIPPEE project will deliver on the goals set within the chosen priority, as its actions address diversity and promote, through innovative and integrated approaches, the promotion and ownership of the shared values of equality, non-discrimination and social inclusion through education, training and youth work. The Youth Priority of “Promoting Quality Youth Work” has been chosen because: Youth work is one of the key ways to “promote common European values, foster social integration, enhance intercultural understanding and bring about a sense of belonging to a community. A deep sense of belonging is a critical tool for the prevention of extremism and radicalization”.YIPPEE Partnership believes that Erasmus+ is an effective instrument to promote the inclusion of people from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a specific focus on young resident refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants.Inclusive education based on specific quality youth work can play a major part in tackling inequalities and on the prevention of marginalization. Youth work and cultural activities are particularly effective ways of reaching out to young people. (The European Agenda on Security, (COM(2015) 185). In this framework project partners believe that a new approach and methodology are needed, where youth work based on true peer learning can be a means of growth both for EU and immigrant/refugees young generation.<< Objectives >>Youth is the future of EU member states. EU Youth Report stated that young people should be able to grow up in inclusive and pluralistic communities, based on European democratic values, the rule of law and fundamental rights Education, youth participation, interfaith and inter- cultural dialogue have a key role to play in preventing radicalisation by promoting common European values, fostering social inclusion, enhancing mutual understanding and tolerance (European Commission, 2015).OBJECTIVESThe general objective of YIPPEE project is to contribute to more equal, intercultural and inclusive youth local communities through new approaches and transnational initiatives. Specific objectives are:-To deliver an innovative and effective approach to youth work within multicultural communities.-To bring young Europeans and immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers of the same age together, cooperating through peer to peer learning, deepening their critical thinking and creating a sense of belonging.-To encourage young multicultural communities to become actors of change through local initiatives, planned at EU level, aimed to tackle discrimination and foster social inclusion.NEEDS & TARGET GROUPS-Young resident refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. It is the common experience of partner organisations that this disadvantaged group can be become more vulnerable to processes which disadvantage them further.-Youth workers, trainers and teachers will be trained through innovative methodologies, teaching/learning modules and guidelines to involve the above-mentioned target group together with:-European youth, to promote creative intercultural teamwork with the aim to concretely foster social inclusion.-Local stakeholders (associations, schools, public authorities, etc.) will be also involved in project's implementation. Project Intellectual Outputs will be innovative as they will be created from the perspective of both youth workers and of immigrant youth; this will bring to the success of YIPPEE Youth Inclusion Scheme. In Ireland, UK Brexit effected although the anti-immigration feeling expressed by the Leave vote was ostensibly directed at other Europeans, racist hate crime also surged immediately after the EU.Several public opinion polls were done in Austria from 2015 until 2017 concerning migration and refugees. One of the polls realized already in June 2017 found out, that more than 70% of respondents were against taking in the refugees from Middle East and North Africa based on quotas. 63, 4% considered these refugees to be a security threat. (The Eurobarometer)Portugal created in 2015 the Refugee Support Platform to help to maintain calm around refugee issues and build support for their integration. Despite this openness, the number of refugees arriving in Portugal has been low so far. There are strong reasons to increase the pace of resettlement which is in the national interest. The emergency situation of Italy as first place of entry to the EU for migrants and refugees has created a number of challenges for both the refugeesand the indigenous population where: on one hand there has been an increase in racism (Amnesty International’s report on human rights, 2018) As evidenced by the recent shocking episodes of Macerata. On the other hand 46% of the Italian population are feeling increasingly unsafe and blame this on the increased numbers of migrants and refugees coming to the country, the highest influx of the last 10 years. (European observatory on Security - Demos, 2017).According to the UNHCR, since 2014, Turkey has been the country hosting the largest number of refugees under UNHCR’s mandate in the world – with the vast majority being nationals of the Syrian Arab Republic. In 2019, the number of Syrians with temporary protection status remained stable at nearly 3.6 million. Over 98% of Syrians lived in urban, peri-urban and rural areas, with less than 2% residing in seven remaining temporary accommodation.<< Implementation >>Thanks to consistent Project Partners experience both in Erasmus KA2 projects and in the main topics addressed by YIPPEE innovative approaches, methodologies, educational contents and inclusive settings will be developed in the framework of IO1 to foster dialogue between young Europeans and resident refugees, asylum seekers and migrants of the same age Research will be a core activity to achieve this first project result and to assure its coherence with target groups’ needs and expectations. Final innovative teaching modules, will be the basis to create innovative non formal education pathways as further project’s results (IO1) Researchers/ trainers / teachers' multicultural staff, including people from a migrant background, will have been selected and trained to deliver a more holistic, culturally sensitive and appropriate approach during youth and social work (C1 + IO2).After testing phase (IO2) innovative non-formal educational pathways will be created to foster social inclusion and dialogue between young Europeans and coetaneous refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. Final version of YIPPEE Youth Inclusion Scheme will be the result of a close cooperation between all target groups, thanks to quality work of Partner organizations. In the framework of YIPPEE Youth Inclusion Scheme, Young EU citizens and young resident refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants of the same age will be involved in creative teamwork with the support of researchers/trainers/ teachers and with participation of local communities.Young participants will thus become actors of joint initiatives with transnational visibility and will have an active role in raising awareness of the importance of effective social inclusion, in the local communities.YIPPEE Guidelines for Cross-sectoral co-operation will be introduced to private organizations and public institutions that will consequently engage on replicating YIPPEE Youth Inclusion Scheme, widening its diffusion and strengthening the whole project’s impact.<< Results >>1.Innovative approaches, methodologies, educational contents and inclusive settings will be developed to foster dialogue between young Europeans and young resident refugees, asylum seekers and migrants of the same age.2.Youth workers/trainers multicultural staff, including people from a migrant background, will be selected and trained to deliver a more holistic approach culturally sensitive and appropriate to improve the quality of their youth/social work.3.Innovative non-formal educational pathways will be created to foster social inclusion and dialogue between young Europeans and coetaneous refugees, asylum seekers and migrants.4.Young EU citizens and immigrant youth will become leaders of joint initiatives with transnational visibility aimed at raising awareness of the importance of concrete social inclusion, in the local communities.5.Private organizations and public institutions will engage on YIPPEE Youth Inclusion Scheme and Charter, widening their diffusion and strengthening the whole project’s impact.
