ThinkFilM: Informal Education through Play and Problem Solving aimed to develop the methodology of educational escape rooms and board games as an effective means of informal education - using play to motivate players to use their knowledge to solve problems and through team work to develop their soft skills at the same time.Running between 2018-2021, the project brought together experts from diverse fields of film and media studies, game design, education, IT and research in an innovative cooperation to support young people and members of the wider community in their film education. Case studies created during the project focused on the development of film and media literacy, calling upon members of the public and young people in particular to test the outputs directly, allowing the exploration of the interconnection between exhibiting principles and play.The international partnership - between the Czech Republic, Great Britain and Poland - connected groups of young people and experts with diverse skills and experience to develop an innovative concept of informal education developing cultural and media literacy. The methodology was based on play and problem solving to understand, use and develop knowledge, social competence and soft skills. The general appeal of the methodology makes it ideal for adaptation to suit the local conditions of a variety of museums, educational institutions and youth organisations, and represents a significant advancement in the use of game-based approaches for education in public settings.
