It may seem like a single straw that is being used in e.g. Lithuania has no effect on the climate in Fiji. That is not entirely true since all the waters from inland meet together and form the global ocean. It means that every single garbage that we dump can come up at the other end of the world. People need to realise that every single-use straw or plastic bag they use might lead marine creatures to injuries. Moreover, the plastics in the ocean often end up in our food - fish and other seafood ingest the small pieces of plastic that lead to chemical contaminants in our diet. With this in mind, “Save The Ocean Project” aims to tackle one of the biggest environmental crisis now – ocean pollution.In general, the problem lies not in plastic by itself but in the way people use it. In order to save the ocean, we need to change people habits, attitude and behaviour towards plastic consumption. To achieve this, during the project we will organise activities that are related to plastic waste reduction in Fiji, Thailand, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Italy and Lithuania.STOP aims to take a small step towards better habits & cleaner ocean, with more specific objectives being:- To learn about the problems & share good practices from around the participating countries/regions;- To look for ways/solutions to encourage people to use plastic more responsibly;- To raise the qualifications and competences of youth workers and leaders in the field of environmental protection;- To increase awareness of the problem by creating social campaigns and related public events;- Strengthen the partnership between European and non-European organisations.The key activities to achieve these objectives will be:1) Research in the participating countries highlighting the specific problems the local youth encounters in relation to ocean pollution;2) Training courses for youth workers from partner organisations to learn the key competences needed to help to combat plastic waste in the oceans through youth work;3) Job shadowing activities to generate a two-way exchange of good practices on the topic between EU and partner countries;4) Development of open educational resources on the subject, among them – mobile application for youth to raise environmental awareness of plastic overuse and a guidebook for youth workers with recommendations on how the dialogue about environmental issues with the youth can be started;5) The final conference where participants will present the results of the project to the public;6) World Ocean Day celebration to raise environmental awareness of the general public in a fun and entertaining way.
