GeniusFuels targets key scientific and technological challenges in the current state of the art production of fuels for maritime and heavy trucks (methanol and/or dimethyl ether) and biochar. This ambitious endeavour aims to provide a groundbreaking solutions by combining a high temperature solid oxide electrolysis process to a biomass gasification process exploiting the oxygen coproduced in the electrolysis as an alternative oxidant to air or to oxygen from expensive air separation units, the hydrogen produced by electrolysis to increase the H2/CO ratio at the exit of the gasifier increasing carbon conversion to fuel and efficiency. The use of oxygen in gasification and gas upgrading reactor thanks to an innovative system for oxy-reforming hydrocarbons and tar inside a gasifier allows to increase the quality and yields of the syngas, increasing the process temperature of the exit gas (up to 900°C), which can be used to heat up the steam and sweep gas for the high temperature SOEC, thus reducing the Balance of plant (BOP) capex and opex costs. The obtained syngas is cleaned by pollutants at low temperature, combined with H2 produced by the electrolysis and then converted to renewable fuels. Two processes will be dedicated to production of MeOH and DME with focus on effect on H2/CO/CO2 ratio on kinetics and effect of pollutants. Finally, the gasification co-produces a 10-20% of biochar which allows to store carbon and allow negative CO2 emission fuels.
