Quantum computing (QC) has the potential to accelerate scientific discovery when coupled to high-performance computing (HPC) installations. A working, fully functional, and reliable computing infrastructure is a prerequisite for breakthroughs in innovation. To this end, the EuroHPC has launched six projects for integrating HPC and QC, covering six different quantum computer architectures. Diversity is key here, as it is still unknown which hardware and software solutions will bring most benefit for actual use cases. Most likely, different combinations will be optimal for different applications. LUMI-Q is the answer of the Czech Republic, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Norway, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands to the call for providing a globally competitive HPC+QC infrastructure for Europe. In LUMI-Q, the qubits of the quantum computer are connected in a star-shape topology, which enables highly efficient execution of certain complex quantum algorithms.
