The ecological and social unsustainability of the global food system is widely acknowledged by scientists, as well as by citizens and governments around the world. Amongst the indicators worth mentioning, we know that the world has already lost 75% of farming plant genetic diversity to high-yielding varieties (FAO, 2004 ), that four crops provide over 60% of the calories we eat, that about 3 billion people have low-quality diets (HLPE/FAO, 2017 ), and that land-grabbing, ecosystem degradation and market pressures are ravaging traditional farming communities worldwide. However, the evidence shows that possible transition pathways to reach more sustainability are set up and experienced at smaller scales, often bringing together actors from the public and private sectors, and from the civil society. These actors try to foster agroecological transitions at the scale not only of farms but also of consumption and agrifood systems, by aiming at reconnecting agriculture, environment, food and health. The diversity of these initiatives in different contexts offer a great opportunity to analyze and capitalize on diverse visons, experiences and methodologies in order to equip sustainable transition of food systems in diverse contexts. The proposal develops a multidisciplinary, multi-sectorial and international exchange network and program focused on agroecological transitions “as they happen” at the scale of territorial food systems. Relying on the specificities of each of the countries under study and on the competences of each of the partners, it aims at sharing knowledge and practices regarding i) the analysis of possible transition pathways – their characteristics and specificities in diverse contexts; ii) approaches to accompany and support such transitions and iii) tools to evaluate their outcomes. Indeed, the actual effects of such dynamics are difficult to assess and require the development of novel tools combining quantitative and qualitative methods. The outcomes of the project will thus be: • the identification of a portfolio of case studies and the elaboration of a helpful typology of transition pathways in diverse contexts, and of the methods, policies and programs that adequately support them in each context; • the definition of context-sensitive methodological frameworks aimed at accompanying these transitions;• the elaboration of evaluation tools aimed at assessing and discussing their effects along the way; • the definition of policy recommendations to support effective transition programs at European, national and regional scales; and allow • the elaboration of adapted training programs both for academics and practitioners (specifically on food systems transitions, both theoretical and hands-on), and the creation of a sustainable research network of academic, institutional, civil society and industrial partners dedicated to agroecological transitions.
