Sti.Funder: European Commission Project Code: 2015-1-TR01-KA205-015652Funder Contribution: 254,892 EURThe Know Your Impact: Social Impact Management Tools for Young Social Entrepreneurs programme has been developed and implemented between the years 2015 and 2017 by four organizations: Koç University Social Impact Forum, Estonian Social Enterprise Network, Social Value UK and Mikado Sustainable Development Consulting. All partnering organizations are committed to developing the social entrepreneurship and increasing the social value through social impact management. Overall objective of this project was strengthening social entrepreneurship as a sustainable and reliable model to solve social problems. Our specific objective was equipping young social entrepreneurs to become more impactful through improving their capacity on social impact analysis. Our strategy was to create an awareness among social entrepreneurs and ecosystem developers, to increase access to knowledge by developing materials in native languages, and to increase skills of social entrepreneurs by providing training and coaching program. Our target group was young start-up social entrepreneurs. Many social entrepreneurship leaders are young and even though they are inspired, they are not much experienced in defining and measuring societal objectives, which results less public benefit, less public support and less funding. The project background:Young start-up social entrepreneurs have much potential and energy, but no experience. Without guidance, the risk to fail is high. In addition, start- up social entrepreneurs are focused on their business models and getting funding rather than tracking their social impact. That is why, with the Know Your Impact programme we aimed to establish necessary mechanism to support these young social entrepreneurs. The Europe 2020 strategy recognizes entrepreneurship and self-employment as key for achieving smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. In its support to entrepreneurship and self-employment, the EC focuses its efforts on business start-ups by unemployed and people from disadvantaged groups, sustainability and quality of work of self-employed businesses and micro-entrepreneurs; and support for social entrepreneurs. According to the Eurostat, youth unemployment rate is 23.4 % in the Euro Area. The concept of social entrepreneurship might be an alternative way to strengthen the situation of young people in the EU.The project consisted of three consecutive parts:-research and needs analysis (August 2015 - March 2016). Team conduct a comprehensive and complementary research on needs analysis among social entrepreneurs and ecosystem developers in Estonia and in Turkey through workshops. The findings were evaluated and published in Needs Analysis Report. The data insights and findings were used in the next stages of the project helping to develop the content, tools and services according to the needs of the direct beneficiary group.-In a second phase - March 2016 to September 2017 - the project team developed the Impact Thinking Framework, that became the frame for developing methodology, the training content and the Maximise Your Impact: A guide for social entrepreneur. The training organized in Istanbul/Turkey between the 19th and 24th of August 2016. On the basis of the developed Impact Thinking methodology, training content and benefiting from the coaching experiences the Maximise Your Impact: A guide for social entrepreneur was developed between the September 2016 and September 2017.-The third phase of the project (September 2016 - September 2017) was dedicated to one-to-one coaching of the training program participants, developing the best practices on social impact analysis and disseminating the developed methodology. The dissemination included two conferences (in Turkey and in Estonia). The results on participants:-Increased awareness of the benefits of social impact analysis among ecosystem developers, social entrepreneurs and social investors-Increased skills of young start-up social entrepreneurs on social impact analysis-Increased training and coaching capacity on social impact analysis of programme partners. -Increased access to knowledge on social impact analysis among ecosystem developers, social entrepreneurs and social investors.Impact of the project-The partner organizations empowered and equipped with the systematic approach to deliver to the social enterprises-Awareness raised on the importance of the social impact management among social entrepreneurs and ecosystem developers -The Needs Analysis Report provided the information on the areas that needs to be addressed in order to develop further the immature social entrepreneurship sector in Turkey. The EGGS online game was created in the serious game technology, i.e. it gives the opportunity to learn based on games (learning while having fun), where students will learn and play how to be food waste and packaging entrepreneurs. The game, not only will teach students about how to reduce food and water waste, labelling and recycling, but it will also make them learning by doing providing real tasks that they have to develop in the real world (especially in schools and back home with the family). The score will be calculated in terms of money saved and the social value of the actions. In this way, students will learn by doing that their daily actions can contribute to make the world a better place to live, increasing their self-esteem and responsibility. The game consists of three modules: school, shop and home. The hero of the game moves between these locations, meeting various people along the way (e.g. colleagues, teachers). He gains knowledge on how to reduce food and packaging waste, and also convinces others to change their behaviour in this matter. An advantage is not only developing the awareness of the social responsibility of players, how to live in accordance with the idea of zero waste, but also entrepreneurship.TARGET GROUPThe target group is students aged 11-15. The indirect target group is teachers/trainers and school staff as they were involved into the project activities due to the young age of the participants. Thanks to the networks of partners of the consortium, the involvement of the teachers were constant during the all life duration of the project. The indirect target group was involved in the project activities and the selection of learning content appropriate to the age of the students, so that this didactic approach and game could be used by professionals working with children as a means of reaching children more effectively and informing them about the benefits of not wasting food, packaging waste, but also entrepreneurship education.PROJECT RESULTS AND INNOVATIONThe main result of the project is the EGGS game, which includes 3 innovative elements: the SROI model (Social Return on Investment) - IO1; Game-based educational content where students will learn through the game how to prevent food and packaging waste at school, outdoors and at home with the family to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns - IO2; an EGGS game that allows students to learn while having fun to make the planet a more sustainable system where waste is transformed back into resource-generating value. Calculating SROI will enable students to become aware of the social impact of their circular economy activities. The idea behind the project was to develop an entrepreneurial mind set in students to strengthen their ability to act in society as citizens of tomorrow's society. The challenge here is to move from entrepreneurship with a business focus to a newer entrepreneurial trend that focuses on an entrepreneurial mind set and behaviour. Entrepreneurship education is an empowering method that enables students to take the future into their own hands by promoting learning by doing, self-efficacy and influence on others and their motivation. In addition, students engaging in activities for the benefit of society by engaging in entrepreneurial activities will have a higher self-esteem and a sense of belonging to society, and thus it will affect their willingness to stay in school, develop, educate and drop out of the desire to leave school too early. In order to achieve the objectives of the project, 5 partner organizations associating students, teachers and school staff, food banks and a training centre, NGOs, city offices were involved in its implementation. The EGGS project ""Students fight food waste and packaging through entrepreneurship education and game-based learning"", focused on the challenges of ""Education and Training 2020"" (ET2020) in the following areas: 1) Improving the quality and efficiency of education and training; 2) promoting equality, social cohesion and active citizenship; and 3) enhancing creativity and innovation, including entrepreneurship, at all levels of education and training."

They represent 99% of all businesses in the EU and account for two thirds of EU28 employment. The availability of skilled labour is an important prerequisite to their prosperity. Nonetheless, there is a mismatch between the skills the labour market demands and those that the education and training system provides. Realising this mismatch, the European Commission has identified that quality work-based learning and apprenticeships can be an efficient way of addressing labour market imbalances. In countries, where there is a well-established apprenticeship system, such as UK, Austria and Germany, SMEs contribute strongly to the training of the future work force through their involvement in work based learning and apprenticeship schemes. On the contrary, in countries with more school based systems, like Slovakia, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Bulgaria, the engagement of SMEs in the supply of placements is more challenging as they lack the support systems and fail to realise both the financial and social benefits. The SMEs awareness of the cost-benefit analysis deriving from the work-based learning is therefore crucial in order to determine their participation to the apprenticeship system. Based on this need, “RoI of WBL and apprenticeships” project suggested the development of a return on investment (RoI) model and digital tool that allow European SMEs to calculate and visualise how investment on WBL and apprenticeships can manifest to multiple benefits. The innovative force of the project is the focus of its model to SMEs needs as well as the integration in the model and the digital tool of both SMEs-related benefits as well as society-related ones in order to clearly demonstrate the multilevel outcomes derived from work-based learning & apprenticeship practices. The general objectives of the project were: - make apparent the benefits of WBL and apprenticeships at the level of individual SMEs and the society. - promote WBL and apprenticeships by motivating the engagement of SMEs. The direct target groups were SME’s entrepreneurs, managers and staff as well as VET providers (vocational training centres, professional schools, employment centres) that cooperate with SMEs for the provision of WBL and apprenticeships. At second level, it targeted VET stakeholders and policy makers, national representatives of European networks as well as VET practitioners and experts. The main results of the project are: - A model for the calculation of RoI of WBL and apprenticeships by SMEs - A digital online tool that will demonstrate in visual way the RoI model - A Good Practices Guide addressed to SMEs, giving guidance on how to design, implement and monitor profitable apprenticeship practices which can benefit the enterprise, the apprentice and the entire society. - Creation and promotion of an apprenticeship-friendly SMEs badge to increase the engagement of companies in the provision of WBL. - Promotion of VET – SMEs cooperation, through experimentation and validation of the RoI model. - Organisation of promotional events addressed to SMEs entrepreneurs, VET centres and stakeholders that are interested to apply and promote the RoI model and tool. The project was implemented by 8 partners from 8 different EU countries in order to create results that have European wide applicability and impact, including countries that are still lacking in the engagement of SMEs in WBL (Slovakia, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Bulgaria), taking benefit from countries that are more advanced (UK and Italy) and using the technological know how of others (Cyprus). The expected long term benefits deriving from the project are: - increased supply of WBL and apprenticeship opportunities from SMEs - empowerment of mainly young people by expanding apprenticeship offer - better matching between skills needed by SMEs and those provided by the VET centers - increased number of VET business partnerships - contribution to the establishment of sustainable funding of WBL and apprenticeships through the self-motivation for investment from the side of the SMEs.
