Circular development advances sustainability by focusing on knowledge, values, and skills beyond traditional practices like recycling. Despite the Netherlands leadership, the 2024 Dutch Circularity Gap Report stresses the need to strengthen human capital to address socio-spatial challenges. The NextGenCircular project integrates professional-to-student and challenge-based learning, enabling Spatial Planning and Design students to apply circularity concepts in practice. Students gain actionable insights, build competitive portfolios, and position themselves as future leaders, bridging the circularity gap while advancing the green labor market and sustainable spatial development.

SELFCITY will explore the processes of self-organisation that underpin community-led project-based responses to climate change in three countries across Europe. Self-organising is one of the three inter-linked processes (along with market-led and state-led mechanisms) that will underpin any pragmatic and innovative transition to an adapted urban environment that is closer to being carbon neutral and that may be resilient in the face of changing (climate-induced) weather patterns. Whereas there has been work on market-led and on state-led initiatives, we understand less well the ways in which civil society constructs sometimes alternative and sometimes complementary ways of addressing climate change. Building on existing research on adapting the built environment, urban neighbourhoods and facilitating energy transition, the project will combine social researcher-led work with participant action research to explore, record and enhance the ways community activists are organizing innovative, creative and pragmatic climate change responses in their communities (of place and of space). It will set out how the problem(s) of climate change are conceptualized both by these activists/practitioners and by the community members they work with. The project will create space for activists to identify capacity-building needs and for the research team to work with activists to fill these needs. Through these reflexive activities both academic and practitioners team will tease out the tensions and potentials of the inter-relation of everyday knowledge and technical knowledge on climate challenge responses. Not only does this project analyse the tensions in these forms of knowledge creation within a given national context, but it uses the device of cross-national comparison to help participants break out of culturally implicit (and fixed) constructions of both the climate change problem and the opportunities for change. Op weg naar een duurzame leefomgeving staat Nederland aan de vooravond van ingrijpende ruimtelijke transformaties. Dit vraagt om een andere manier van denken en doen. De nieuwe Omgevingswet en de NOVI zetten in op een cultuurverandering met op maat gesneden afwegingen en intensieve samenwerking tussen stakeholders. Een potentieel cruciale rol is hierbij weggelegd voor ruimtelijk ontwerpers. Ruimtelijk ontwerpers zijn, naast hun traditionele rol om te komen tot inrichtingsvoorstellen, steeds vaker grenswerkers die in participatieve ontwerpprocessen verschillen overbruggen en samenwerking initiëren. Helaas is er slechts beperkt inzicht in grenswerken door ruimtelijk ontwerpers en de potentie hiervan in transformatieve planningsprocessen. Met dit onderzoek ontwikkelen we praktische en toepasbare inzichten voor een optimale inzet van ruimtelijk ontwerpers als grenswerkers. De literatuur over grenswerken maakt een onderscheid in verschillende activiteiten en rollen voor grenswerkers, en condities die grenswerk mogelijk maken. De focus in dit verkennende onderzoek ligt op rollen en kritische condities, die we op het spoor willen komen via een internationale casestudie met vier cases: het Sigma plan (België); Ruimte voor de Rivier (Nederland); ‘Water as Leverage’ in Semarang (Indonesië); en één van de deelgebieden van ‘Rebuild by Design’ (Verenigde Staten). Via deze internationale cases, elk met een specifieke context, wordt breed inzicht verkregen in de rollen en condities voor grenswerken door ruimtelijk ontwerpers. De resultaten van de casestudie vormen de input voor een focusgroep discussie met Nederlandse ruimtelijke ordeningsprofessionals. Tijdens deze bijeenkomst worden praktische aanbevelingen geformuleerd voor de inzet van ruimtelijk ontwerpers als grenswerkers in een nieuwe Nederlandse ruimtelijke ordeningspraktijk.

Cities are threatened by increasing flood risk. Currently, inadequate governance processes and land uses even exacerbate urban vulnerability to flooding. This reality calls for a new agenda: the ?flood resilient city?. Aim of the research project is to operationalize the theoretical notion of resilience, and suggest policy strategies for creating flood resilient cities. The project will contribute to an emerging debate on defining resilience, and also to convert the concept into urban development practice. The core of the research project involves a multi-method, comparative study on three exemplary cities (London, Hamburg and Rotterdam).
