This project aims at disseminating awareness on the impacts of food choices which greatly affect the environment. This project is imparting knowledge among young people from the partner organizations in Germany, Poland, Kenya and Malawi. It is looking at every day’s food choices as having impacts on the environment yet among many, less attention is given to the growing problem. As the population of the world is growing, so is the demand for food forcing agricultural companies and individual farmers to produce enough through consistent monoculture and other practices that deplete the soil of its nutrients. As a result, the heavy use of pesticides and fertilizers which affect the environment is adopted. Nevertheless, the use of fertilizers only simplify the biochemistry of the soil making the produced food less nutritious. Moreover, plants cured with pesticides seldom yield their own phytochemicals and biologically active compounds that protect them from pests despite their benefit to humans. Large ruminant animals which also produce foods high on the food chain feed on plants grown under the use of fertilizers which finally causes both land and water pollution. Mostly, the land that these animals graze on is vast with great emissions from the converted forestland leading to methane production from their digestion and manure. As such, the partner organizations through this project aim at increasing awareness on food choices impacting the environment. The idea is to inspire stakeholders to better understand the multiple environmental consequences of their food production and choices. It is also about a holistic approach to sustaining the environment while preparing young people to make informed choices as they take active roles in their societies.Further, the project seeks to enhance awareness on food choices, positive behavior change and social mobilization in order to help set a positive view of daily environmental actions. It also wishes to increase youth exposure to various cultures, traditions and beliefs for transformed food choices through international youth exchange programs. This will advance participants' awareness and understanding of other cultures while simultaneously build networks of international contacts that will aid active participation in society and development of a sense of identity and citizenship among the youth. The project also desires to increase access to diversified food choices for enhance environmental rehabilitation through food selection, production and preparation while creating entrepreneurship skills. Finally, the partner organizations look forward to having responsible youth minding their daily food choices while protecting the environment. Although it is unrealistic to expect most of the world’s population to turn into vegetarians overnight, awareness of a positive environmental impact could help transform communities.
