In 2016 the 12-year program Fundamental Fluid Dynamics Challenges in Inkjet Printing (FIP) was started. In a consortium consisting of UT, TU/e and Canon Production Printing (Océ at the time) the first stage (FIP-I) was launched that will finish in 2022. The scientific goal of FIP is to gain more insight into the fluid dynamic challenges of the inkjet printing process to meet the demands of the future. Increasing resolution, speeding up the process, ink improvement and expansion of the field of applications are of great importance. The research focuses both on the processes in printhead and on the nozzle plate as well as on the processes on the substrate side. Insights from FIP I already resulted in improvements that could be readily applied at Canon Production Printing. This proposal concerns the second stage of the program, FIP II. The University of Utrecht will join the consortium. There will be additional attention to sustainable, environmentally friendly inks based on water as well as inks of more complex composition where the physicochemical hydrodynamics of droplets become essential. By means of experiments, theory and computer simulation the key physicochemical processes of the inkjet process will be studied. The fluid dynamics in the inkjet channel, the meniscus dynamics, droplet formation, jetting, droplet impact and spreading, droplet coalescence, droplet-film and droplet-paper interaction, and droplet evaporation and solidification will be studied.
