The main aim of this visit is to develop a practical modeling of a hybrid k-balanced location problem in combination with a transportation problem, which will support a PhD candidate at TU Delft who is currently working on an NWO project called: “Towards virtual ports in a physical internet”. We will examine the single or multi-objective aspect of the modelling. We also look at the different parameters, like discrete or continuous, weighted or unweighted demand points, and we will examine the complexity of the proposed model(s). This will provide a general point of view to the problem and allow us to propose efficient approaches to solve the different variation of the problem. An exact polynomial approach is developed to the simple case of the problem, and proposing an approximation and efficient heuristic for the NP-hard variation of the problem. In each case, the correctness of the algorithms will be demonstrated. Finally we will implement the proposed algorithms to a real-world case in the context of Physical Internet, in particular the approximation and heuristic algorithms, which are more practical when applied to a real-world problem.

The main challenge addressed in FTMAAS (Freight Traffic Management As A Service) is the integration of logistics and traffic management information. Digitalization is progressing quickly in both areas, but operational connections and synergies are scarce. The mission of the FTMAAS Living Lab is to connect these two subsystems by developing, implementing and testing integrating software applications that benefit both worlds. The Living Lab focuses on the International Freight Corridor South (Rotterdam-Venlo) and manages 3 main running cases and 6 research subprojects. Research focuses on questions of value creation, analytics and optimization of both logistics and network level traffic management.

Automated vehicles can contribute to sustainable and efficient transport. When driving slowly, cautiously and predictably, they could share the road and interact with pedestrians and cyclists. In this project we study the traffic safety of this interaction within the 3D VR Digital Twin of the Marineterrein Amsterdam Living Lab (MALL).
