If the needs of men with respect to reproductive heath education and services are not considered, progress towards better health for people of both successes will be hampered. A gender-based program of research that takes both male and female roles into account will benefit the social and physical health of the entire family and contribute to the empowerment of women. Violence against women, including physical and sexual violence, is increasingly being recognized as an important global health problem. Although many women have suffered violence at the hands of strangers, more commonly the violence perpetrators are the women's intimate partners (husband or boyfriends). Studies in developed and developing countries have found that numerous women have been victims of abusive behaviour, and that approximately 5% of the healthy years of life lost to women of reproductive age in developing countries is due to violence. Given that there has been some documentation of wife abuse in India, and that young women are at high risk for abuse, it is important to examine potential associations between abuse and reproductive health issues of women and their partners. Although traditional Indian value systems condemn sexual relationships outside marriage, there are suggestions that these norms are changing, resulting in increased premarital and extramarital sex. Culturally attitudes in India also embody the notion that wives should be respectful to their husbands and should try to obey their commands; however, the use of physical force by husbands as a means of controlling their wives is not as widely sanctioned in the culture. In order to achieve the need and objectives the sub themes for the conference has been set as follows: (a) Health, Nutrition and Environment, (b) Programmes and Policies of Population and Health, (c) Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS, (d) Urbanization and Migration, (e) Poverty and Development, (f) Gender Issues. It is needless to mention that the conference will provide ample opportunity to researchers of different disciplines to acquaint themselves with the problems and techniques of each other. It will help in designing most appropriate methodologies for analysis of data obtained under different frames so that fruitful conclusions are drawn in most economical way for planned development of the nation.
