Very preterm birth affects ~1% of all births in the Netherlands and can lead to long-term motor, cognitive, and behavioral impairments. These challenges are exacerbated in children from low socioeconomic backgrounds, who face additional risks for educational setbacks. This pilot study will assess the effect of free playschool with parental education, on playschool adherence and developmental outcomes among 30 preterm children from low SES. I expect that education on the importance of playschool attendance and resolving financial barriers will improve adherence. Findings can guide policies on funding playschool for preterm children to improve long-term educational and social outcomes.

There is consensus that the sharply rising costs of expensive cancer care are becoming unaffordable for society. One of the solutions being developed is reducing treatment dose and duration, because this strongly reduces costs and side-effects as well. But what if treatment also becomes somewhat less effective? Ought patient accept this for the sake of society? How much loss of overall survival gain or prospect for cure should they accept? This project addresses these complex questions with an integrated approach based on the normative ethics literature and an empirical ethics approach that in involves focus groups with patients and citizen.

The Erasmus MC takes a two-pronged approach to enhancing Open Science (OS) and Team Science policy directed at both researchers and their hosting departments. We will further develop our Care-4-Research Talent programme to include Team Science and extend our innovative Portfolio Model that is used to determine the allocation of finances to departments with Open Science practices. By addressing both the individual and institutional levels, we aim to stimulate an environment that recognizes and rewards the adoption of OS practices across the Erasmus MC. This proposal is a collaboration between research policy advisors, data stewards and HR advisors.
