The objectives of ANRGI are a rapid increase of energy access in remote areas and a drastic reduction of losses and waste of energy, including polluting energy generation (diesel), and a natural replacement of combustion scooters with electric alternatives, to be achieved by radical improvement of power quality. A lot of research has been performed on the development of renewable energy sources and its storage and efficient power conversion. Optimizing these system to real life situations and reducing the complexity of interconnecting networks, the possibility of natural growing grids arises and is required for achieving universal electricity access . Conventional smart-grid research is founded on large distribution grids with a huge diversity of loads, and control in the minutes-range. We need a paradigm shift for micro-grids for remote areas and island configurations. Modern electronic equipment creates non-linear effects in the (sub)-millisecond range which is creating a drastic decrease in efficiency, due to over-dimensioning of apparent power with respect the real power. Furthermore temporarily large consumers are causing a peak in energy demand requiring in costly over-dimensioning. Overcapacity is not available in remote or islanded micro-grids and temporarily loads can result in a complete shut down of supply . Energy is already ubiquitously and acceptance of renewable energy is based on cost. ANRGI aims to increase affordability, decrease cost of ownership, and improve quality of supply. ANRGI will connect to existing energizing development projects like EnDev. ANRGI will deliver novel technologies to improve power quality, will implement low-cost measurement techniques enabling energy sharing and adaptive growth, and will deliver testbeds using Tiny Houses, which will also be used for creating awareness for high-school students and general public, and will develop and make available/install community testbeds in Indonesia. ANRGI will deliver outreach activities using social media workshops and roadshows.

The maritime sector needs batteries for the transition to zero-emission shipping. This project investigates batteries that are specifically suitable for the maritime sector. These batteries need to be safer and cheaper, and to have a longer life-time. They need to be based on non-critical materials that can be used in a circular way. Furthermore, they need to be used optimally in the energy system of the ship. The aim is that the Dutch maritime industry develops the capability to apply circular battery technology to build ships with lower emissions.

SEANERGETIC proposes a novel framework to enable zero-emission and circular shipping. Leveraging data from the broad project consortium, SEANERGETIC aim to extend the lifetime, improve efficiency and ascertain the safety of current battery and fuel cell technologies. SEANERGETIC will support stakeholders during the transition to zero-emission and circular shipping by providing new business models informed by data focusing on recycling and circularity and developing new training and education. Our multidisciplinary research team will tackle technical, business, and education-related challenges to prepare the next generation of engineers and professionals for the imminent transition to zero-emission and circular shipping.
