New scientific approaches will be pursued to achieve breakthroughs for cost- and energy-efficient sustainable production of fuels and chemicals by identifying, developing and testing improved catalysts, key components such as reactors, electrolysers and innovative approaches for electrified heating. Laboratory work using the latest generation analytical equipment will be combined with techno-economic and lifecycle assessments of a range of technologies to help industry decarbonise.

However, not everyone responds to this therapy, and in 40% of cases, it causes side effects, such as severe diarrhea (7 to 14 times a day). As a result, the quality of life, as well as survival, deteriorates, placing a heavy burden on both family members and hospital staff. Currently, there are no available tests to predict the response or side effects. Within OPTIMA, three screening tests are being validated clinically to provide physicians with a toolbox for predicting the response to irinotecan and preventing side effects.

Het concept ‘Circulaire Economie’ is voor een toenemend aantal bedrijven een interessant perspectief. Een circulaire economie is een economisch systeem met volledige herbruikbaarheid van producten, componenten en grondstoffen en het behoud van natuurlijke hulpbronnen in een robuust ecosysteem. In een circulaire economie worden op hoofdlijnen vier businessmodellen onderkend: 1) design, 2) het zo lang mogelijk gebruiken van goederen in de gebruiksfase, 3) hergebruik en recycling 4) regie en support van de hele keten. De omslag naar een circulaire economie biedt kansen voor de logistieke sector, zowel in aantal banen, CO2 reductie, als een toevoeging op het BNP. De businessmodellen 1 en 2 zijn reeds in ontwikkeling en worden opgepakt door een groot aantal maak-bedrijven en dienstverleners. Een grote kans voor de logistieke sector is het nemen van de regierol in de keten. Een logistieke dienstverlener weet welke reststromen er bij bedrijven zijn. Met kennis van zaken over waar deze reststromen ingezet kunnen worden is een rol als ketenregisseur grondstoffen logisch. De community LogiCE heeft als doel om de circulaire economie versneld te bereiken door kennis vanuit de logistiek en de circulaire economie in een actieve wisselwerking tussen bedrijven, lokale overheden en wetenschappers te ontwikkelen en toe te passen. De community bouwt voort op bestaande communities van Het Groene Brein en netwerken rondom retourlogistiek.

These radical changes are described in eight so-called Gamechangers (GCs). In this proposal we have selected three subprojects who are contributing to three different GCs. Subproject 1: This project explores the role of strategic, wilful ignorance of sustainability, health, and animal welfare issues by consumers that facilitate (too) high levels of meat consumption. A behavioural intervention is designed with the aim to reduce ignorance of such issues in order to curtail meat consumption, and promote plant-based consumption. Subproject 2: Light intercepted by the canopy of a crop dictates the energy available for efficient photosynthesis, however its measurements in the field is challenged by its large temporal and spatial variability. Here we want to test the suitability of low-cost continuous line ceptometers for high-throughput phenotyping. Subproject 3: Exploring new protein sources requires multidisciplinary collaboration. P-PRO aims to leverage this effort by taking the lead in constructing a shared ontology (a machine-readable network of concepts and relations). P-PRO will allow researchers, product developers and others to access relevant data in a transparent and efficient way using their terminology.
