    Nano-Detect develops highly structured SERS substrates for ultra-sensitive detection of liquids and gases, including toxins and chemical warfare agents. Unlike conventional non-ordered substrates, our substrates feature precisely structured gold nanopyramids, fabricated using cleanroom chip-manufacturing techniques. This ensures low standard deviations and high sensitivity. This project aims to optimize batch fabrication and reduce costs. Additionally, we will enhance compatibility with commercial Raman detectors and expand toxin detection capabilities to facilitate market entry and commercialization of our technology.

    The CLEAR initiative (Chemistry Learning for Environmental Action and Responsibility) at the University of Twente integrates systems thinking into the Chemical Science & Engineering programme, to tackle sustainability challenges. Students develop systems thinking to visualize interconnections, examine changes over time, and analyse how system-level phenomena emerge from the interactions of parts. CLEAR helps students tackle sustainability challenges like carbon emissions and climate change, focusing on three pillars: 1. Essential-Skills Development 2. Sustainability-Driven Curriculum 3. Supportive Learning Environment

    Many criminal cases, that affect people financially and emotionally, remain unsolved, because current analysis is not providing enough intelligence. In this project we aim to develop two different tools to enhance the effectivity and efficiency of crime scene investigation. First one is an innovative rapid test to determine whether a trace sample contains sufficient DNA that enables suspect identification. Second tool is a microfluidic device to establish at the crime scene if biological traces belong to the same individual (victim/suspect). With this we aim to increase the trust and confidence of citizens in government and law enforcing agencies.

    Injecting without needles is challenging because all skins are different. The study of fast traveling tiny droplets impacting on soft substrates will give researchers knowledge to inject without harming the skin. It will also enable the determination of skin properties for vaccinations, cosmetics, and other uses, where needles are feared.
