The Islands have an urgent need to transform their tourism-dependent economy into a resilient and green one, as they are especially vulnerable to climate change and are highly dependent on fossil fuels. The REGENERATE’s renovation formula combines a market-driven, people-centric support with affordable financing, via in local One-Stop-Shop renovation offices on each island. REGENERATE’s pipeline approach is grounded in the realities of the islands building stock, defined energy efficiency & renewable energy upgrades, residents’ ability and willingness to pay. Thus, a realistic assessment of the pipeline supports the design of a self-sustainable business model for the OSS offices and enables the financing instrument to raise private capital to invest in individual home renovation projects. Stimulating bottom-up demand is at the core of this approach; REGENERATE will build upon the existing citizen engagement strategies on the islands and enhance their reach and scope. The impact goes well beyond energy savings, by boosting health, wellbeing and comfort of families, resulting in the reduction of more than 25,727 tCO2-eq/year and creating more than 4,000 jobs, 5 years after the project is completed.

It aims the creation of a series of European educational resources for colleges and high schools focused on the discovery of the coastal and marine environment in the Mediterranean: an educational reference system for teachers, an activity guide for teachers and students, and an online resource center capitalizing the activities, providing additional educational materials based on experience feedback covering the entire Mediterranean Basin. The project is primarily focused on pupils, middle and high school teachers, and environmental educators from Europe-Mediterranean working in schools. It brings them new educational tools focused on the specific issues of environmental protection in the Mediterranean Sea (pollution and waste, mass tourism, over fishing, biodiversity loss, coastal erosion, climate change ...) helping to understand the phenomena, to identify the challenges for the future and to contribute to the collective search for solutions. The project is based on the recognition of a lack of environmental education resources specifically focused on the Mediterranean Sea and analyzing the issues and environmental problems under the prism of human/nature cohabitation. The MED EDUC educational resources will be produced in the frame of a high valued transnational, intercultural and multidisciplinary cooperation, combining multiple expertise from the world of formal and non-formal education and the economic and social world. These resources will address the issue of environmental education skills and competencies from multiple focus: - With the creation of a MED EDUC reference system for middle and high school teachers in all disciplines, the project will reinforce the integration of environmental education, focused on the Mediterranean Sea, in the fundamental disciplines, with proposals for activities and content for all age groups from high school to high school and for all subject areas (science, humanities, literary, artistic, physical education, civic education), - This reference system, and the MED EDUC activity guide associated with it, will also contribute to reinforcing the emergence of multidisciplinary educational projects, one of the flagship issue of formal education, by proposing activities integrating different themes and different pedagogical approaches, - By dealing with environmental issues from the perspective of sustainable development, human / nature coexistence in the Mediterranean basin, and combining both the analytical approach (understanding of phenomena) and the invitation to action and projects by and for young people, MED EDUC will also contribute to enrich the field of citizenship education for young Europeans, - By focusing on Euro-Mediterranean cooperation and the intercultural approach to understanding and acting on environmental issues, and promoting exchanges and cooperation (the Mediterranean Sea), MED EDUC will contribute to the emergence of a Mediterranean citizenship of young people based on exchange and mutual understanding, while the Mediterranean basin is today a major subject of social, ethnic and religious tensions. The project also supports the idea of ""opening values and open-mindedness"": - Opening of middle schools and colleges on their environment: to get to know one's place of life, to bring into harmony school disciplines and everyday life - Opening of institutions to their environment: the project partnership includes schools, environmental education centers, environmental and cultural private companies, local authorities and research centers, and the MED EDUC educational activities will be based to a large extent on mobilization of resources and local partners around schools - International openness with intercultural educational tools, reflecting the diversity of problems, contexts, approaches all around the Mediterranean basin and highlighting common features and territorial specificities - International openness always with the emergence of a MED EDUC Mediterranean educational community that will bring together project partners, associated partners, and all those who wish to do so at the end of the project."

The chosen islands are complementary in many aspects: location, size, connection with the mainland, economic development, renewable share and carbon intensity. INSULAE contributes to the Clean Energy for EU Islands Initiative by providing an Investment Planning Tool (IPT) able to create Actions Plans for the islands to generate their own sustainable, low-cost energy. The interventions will prove the ability of the use cases to develop RES-based systems 40-70% cheaper than diesel generation, thus, enabling an average reduction of the fossil fuel consumption of 11% after a large deployment of the use cases in the INSULAE islands. The INSULAE IPT will support the decision maker on the selection and design of cost effective Action Plans looking for the island decarbonization. It will be mainly composed by two modules: the Island modeling assistant and the Scenarisation module. The project team is carefully balanced along all the value chain counting with five public authorities, six energy and water utilities, four technology providers, two energy software developers, six RTOs, one environment NGO, one business models expert, one engineering company and one entity for social aspects and replication. The legal and regulatory framework of 57% of the total population living in EU islands will be directly considered within the project.
