Our project is a pupil exchange between Sharples School in Bolton, England and IES Numero 1 in Javea, Spain. The aim is to enrich the learning and cultural experiences of our disadvantaged pupils who, without this funding, would not have the opportunity to visit another European culture. The activities will vary between the two countries. When the Sharples School is hosting the pupils from IES, the focus will be on science. This is because Sharples is a specialist science college and therefore we will be educating the pupils visiting us using the specific expertise of our science teachers. As well as this, we will give our visitors the opportunity to do undertake some astronomy studies in our school observatory. To bring these topics to life, the week will also include visits to places such as the Science and Industry museum in Manchester to further enrich learning. When IES Numero 1 are hosting the pupils from Sharples School, the focus will be on accelerated language learning and cultural experiences. IES, due to having pupils who speak in excess of 30 languages, have developed methodologies to teach the Spanish language to their pupils in a timely manner to allow them to access the curriculum at an age appropriate level as quickly as possible. Language learning in this environment will greatly benefit the pupils from Sharples School who are studying Spanish for their GCSE qualifications. We aim to take 14 pupils on each exchange over the two year project period, with 7 pupils each time. The short term impact envisaged is an increase in the confidence of our pupils speaking another language, the Spanish students acquiring science specific skills and a passion for astronomy, and above all, the opportunity for our pupils to see themselves as European citizens by visiting and being fully immersed in another culture. In the long term, we hope that this project will inspire the pupils who have taken part to further their travels and broaden their horizons. By establishing this initial face to face contact with our partner school, we also hope to have the opportunity to carry on these visits to further strengthen the relationships between our pupils and colleagues. The schools will keep in contact via eTwinning and will continue to communicate and share information and best practice for many years to come.
