It is in this area, where one of the largest and most important academic and research hubs in Poland is located, consisting of many higher education and research institutions, including those from top 20 of Polish universities. It is also a workplace for more than 7000 researchers, conducting scientific explorations in almost every field of science. Pomorska Noc Naukowców (en. Pomeranian Researchers' Night - PRN) first organized on 29th September 2023, is success of the grassroots initiative of the Pomeranian scientific community. This annual event organized on last Friday of September is first of such scale within the region, and only third one in whole country. Main goal of PRN is to establish a greater impact on the social development of the region by popularizing science, bringing scientists closer to the public, showing how their work affects our everyday life, finally: encouraging children and youth to choose a scientific career in the future. Within the project “NightMission" we shall develop PRN in years 2024 and 2025 by bounding it with Researchers at Schools initiative. The common denominator of activities addressed to the public will be “European challenges”, presented through the prism of the everyday work of scientists in the region. The main goal of NightMission is to achieve enhanced engagement of Pomerania region citizens with European scale excellent research and research teams, within highly inclusive space of Researchers Night and during Researchers at Schools Initiative. Project will be implemented via meetings, classes, workshops and information campaigns, and shall consolidate two main messages: "science is shaping our everyday lives all the time" and "research is the answer to the challenges of the modern world".

In addition, general distrust of politics has been exacerbated by populist and neo-nationalist political forces that interpret the pluralistic and agnostic nature of democracy as a weakness. These and similar tendencies could have grave consequences through a further erosion of multicultural conviviality and social cohesion in Europe. Nevertheless, populism and political disaffection on a more general level are being met by counter currents of local political activism and an increasing consciousness of the political role of social movements in cities and urban areas. Cities have emerged as vital political arenas for the development of the European public sphere and the promotion of inclusion, social agendas and active citizenship. In addition, different forms of citizen participation have started to transform governance cultures of several large European cities, taking active roles in local elections, and becoming part of local political structures, from Paris to Istanbul. Based on several case studies and pilots of governance innovation initiatives we will investigate the ways in which social movements coupled with local government reform initiatives create momentum for political change that include more inclusive and participatory forms of governance. In EUARENAS we will target the following: 1) the ways in which these practices emerge, the main actors, the strategies, methods and digital platforms they develop to attract attention and how they appropriate urban spaces, 2) economic, political and cultural factors influencing local outcomes, 3) horizontal and vertical governance implications of governance innovations and 4) the added value of solutions (housing, social care, social justice, social diversity, climate change) provided by participatory/deliberative means.

Urban sprawl, population growth and industrialization bring previously unrecognised drivers of biodiversity loss, including light and noise pollution. The EU has adopted policies, including the EU Green Deal and the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, to enable transformative change through better protection of biodiversity and nature restoration activities. However, current projections suggest that the EU’s 2030 biodiversity target will not be met; an alternative plan is required. PLAN-B takes an integrated, multidisciplinary and multi-actor approach to deliver better understanding and support reduction of light and noise pollution impacts on terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystem services. Key outputs of PLAN-B include: a framework and supporting handbook for assessing light and noise pollution impacts to inform environmental decision-making; an open access database on light and noise impacts on terrestrial biodiversity; spatiotemporal models for evaluating noise and light impacts on terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystem services, including at the European scale; innovative solutions to prevent and mitigate light and noise pollution impacts; recommendations for enhancing legal and policy frameworks to reduce light and noise pollution impacts on terrestrial biodiversity; and sustainable Communities of Practice (CoPs), centred around key stakeholder groups, on the impacts of light and noise on terrestrial biodiversity. Working with European and international partners, including from Brazil, CoPs, key networks (e.g. Biodiversa+) and the Horizon Europe sister project on aquatic biodiversity and ecosystems, PLAN-B will maximise its global reach and research impact. Through its work programme, PLAN-B will create the enabling conditions to support and enhance activities planned in the EU biodiversity strategy and provide a new path towards meeting the EU and international biodiversity targets.

The aim is to make use of the existing strategic network to enhance the research carried on in the field of urban waterfronts. To face the future challenges in managing, adapting and mitigating the effect brought by the increasing number of disasters, ULHT/LEAU has been cooperating with HEI partners to produce and disseminate solutions, that enhance resilience. The research network will reinforce the dynamic partnerships and increase the quality and technologic innovations of the research, to design tools, to face the growing costs imposed by disasters. S.O.S. waterfront enables ULHT/LEAU and HEI partners to bring excellence in research to a higher level and to improve its international position. To reach excellence requires the call for (1) interdisciplinary and international research case studies, (2) steady sustainable research structure, (3) dissemination and open access of knowledge covered by different cultures, sciences and communities in each location. The organization of data of comparative cases and algorithms will be used to provide future scenarios thus reinforcing the centre of our research project. Our work methodology has been attracting the collaboration of top researchers which S.O.S. waterfront aims to gather in the exchange of knowledge and joint initiatives to produce results that are valuable to Europe and applicable worldwide. The Doctorate Consortium will build up trans-national collaborative events with local Municipalities to produce results . The measures to reach scientific innovation and excellence are implemented and verified in each step. The continuous exposure of the results produced by design research includes exhibition, publications, media and digital platforms to reach wider audiences, local and global.
