The motivation that drives the EU-Africa DIGILOGIC project is to facilitate and stimulate the unleashing of the innovation potential within Africa’s young engineers and entrepreneurs. It achieves this through the creation of the first Pan EU-Africa sustainable network of DIHs, focussing on the topic of smart logistics. DIGILOGIC sees the horizontally connecting logistics industry at the converging point of interest for digital innovation for social and business development, a crucial node for Europe’s and Africa’s sustainable prosperity. DIGILOGIC is centered on five DIHs: three DIHs in Europe (DE, FI, IT) and two DIHs in Africa, reaching nine countries (GH, NG, ZM, ZA, KE, MW, ZW, NA, MZ). Furthermore, DIGILOGIC is unique in that it includes both an online eLearning and collaboration platform for smart logistics and the first practical demonstration of the success of this new federation of smart logistic EU-Africa DIHs, by incorporating four, so-called, “Challenges” that will involve both European and African innovators (startups, ICT professionals, Micro SMEs) in real projects in the logistic sector, to solve existing issues that require new technological solutions. These Challenges (both in EU and AU) will not only demonstrate the benefits of using trained and skilled persons from low- /middle- income African countries (thereby contributing to youth employment), but will set the stage for tighter collaboration between EU-AU Digital Innovation Hubs and contribute to reinforce the international dimension strategic partnership and outreach of the Horizon 2020 ICT Programme 2018-2020 and contributing to the upcoming Horizon Europe.

The sole aim of the network is to spark incremental (cut 50% cost of advance robotics solutions, double the growth of robotics market) and disruptive (maximum productivity & optimum agility) innovations in over 300,000 Manufacturing SMEs and Mid-Caps. It will support SMEs in their Agile Production challenge (50% increase in productivity) and unleash their digitalization potential by enabling robot solutions that are more cost effective at lower lot sizes. DIH^2 relies on: • A Common Open Platform Reference Architecture for Agile Production (COPRA-AP) -based on Industrial Data Space Reference Architecture Model and FIWARE technologies- to serve the needs of SMEs by means of a continuously growing set of Robotic-based Open Standard Enablers (ROSE-AP). • A marketplace as one-stop-shop for SMEs to access essential services for digital transformation including business modelling, technical support, access to skills and finance. • 2 competitive Open Calls to launch an ambitious Technology Transfer Program with 260 Agility Audits, 26 cross-border Technology Transfer Experiments and 26 ROSE-AP, leveraging over 26M€ of public & private funding in advance robotics solutions for Agile Production. • Members deeply rooted in their regional Smart Specialization Strategy (bringing €5M additional funding on top of EU funds), ensuring ‘working distance’ services for every SME in Europe - whichever the sector, wherever the location, whatever the size. • A Corporate Sponsorship Program from equipment and automation suppliers committed with the network to get access to wider market and latest research in robotics. DIH^2 will transform this network into a self-sustainable non-profit association with members all over Europe. DIH^2 will demonstrate that public funded research can help SMEs & Mid-Caps achieve digital excellence and global competitiveness through adopting advanced robotics solutions in Agile Production.

The main outcome of RISE-SME is to build a methodology for different industrial ecosystems, that can identify disruptions and technological opportunities for the uptake of advanced technologies in SMEs, so as to enable flexible, agile and resilient supply chains that can easily be adapted. In order to do so, the following activities will be deployed: • Mapping of existing industrial ecosystems and its associated supply chain models, in order to identify critical dependencies and weaknesses in specific industrial ecosystem • Developing a methodology for detecting and anticipating disruptions with long term effects on the supply chain, to reduce strategic dependencies on critical products, especially on advanced technologies • Mapping and scouting advanced technologies and their associated solutions from technology suppliers that can help supply chain processes to be less uncertain and complex • Analysing existing technology gaps in several industrial ecosystems, leading to a matchmaking tool with tech-savvy and traditional SMEs • Building alliances among traditional and tech-savvy SMEs through cluster organisations and DIHs in the industrial ecosystem, resulting into the launch of a pilot in each one of the ecosystems The project consortium will leverage their knowledge on supply chain and their reach to key supply chain actors, traditional SMEs and technology suppliers. The involvement of technology partners and entities representing tech-savvy SMEs will ensure a thorough consideration of the following advanced technologies: robotics, AI, IoT, Blockchain, edge computing, AR/VR solutions, B2B digital platforms, Big Data/analytics technology, 3D printing, advanced materials, micro- and nanoelectronics, nanotechnologies and photonics, among others.

The project focuses on the establishment of affordable, collaborative, and coordinated Systems of Logistics Networks across Europe. It promotes the adoption of open standardised processes to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions, aligning with the UN 2030 sustainable development agenda. IKIGAI will scale up five complementary and forward-looking Logistics Innovations (LIs) (advancing them from TRL5 to 8, looking also into other scalability aspects e.g. regulation, market and social), building collaboration on shared resources and capacity, respect, openness, transparency and trust: [LI1] Online and offline trustee matchmaking and volume pooling for electrification and increased intermodality, [LI2] eFTI compliance Collaborative Service Platform for SMEs, [LI3] Smart and synchromodal hubs for hyperconnected urban logistics, [LI4] Intelligent, standard end-to-end chain of custody for carbon emission calculation, [LI5] Open volume pooled governance for reusable standard modular boxes. Recognising that companies can better evolve collaboratively, aligning logistics and decarbonisation within a unified transition path, IKIGAI will drive the Twin Transition to net-zero logistics by mobilising an open and collaborative ecosystem of global supply chain players committed to systemic change. Beyond adopting the LIs and testing them in real-world pilots, IKIGAI will re-engineer supply chain logistics services (Sx) such as volume pooling/asset sharing, warehousing, freight forwarding/intermodality, cross-docking and last-mile delivery.
