Eur3ka will deliver a trusted and unique capability to plug and collectively respond to a sudden demand increased in a coordinated and effective manner at unprecedented scale. Eur3ka mission is to bring together most recent R&I results in (1) Industry 4.0 standards, open automation modular manufacturing production line enablers; (2) industrial international common data space enablers and digital infrastructures; (3) global on-demand and manufacturing as a service platforms; (4) connected and smarter supply networks, and global medical supplies and equipment repositories; (5) the vibrant European and Global network of manufacturing DIH network innovation services and open experimental facilities. The main ambition of Eur3ka is to enable and facilitate global and fair access to (1) a Plug & Respond (P&R) repurposing resource coordination framework for pandemic crisis response, (2) a common open standardized modular manufacturing reference architecture and solutions, and (3) top digitally sovereign cross-sectorial manufacturing networks and capacities that should allow to connect global manufacturing and supply chain capabilities and medical knowledge on-demand and as-a-Service across the globe in an IP-responsive manner to ensure rapid manufacturing repurposing for an increased and sudden demand of medical supplies and equipment. Eur3ka builds and extends the existing Global Network of Advanced Manufacturing Hubs (AMHUBs) to leverage a comprehensive COVID response based on solid socio-tecno-economic pillars that bring together advanced manufacturing and digital enablers that will raise robustness, redundancy, resourcefulness, response, and recovery against current and future pandemics. If robots are to become well accepted across the whole spectra of production industries, real evidence that they can operate in an open, modular and scalable way is needed. ODIN aspires to fill this gap by bringing technology from the latest ground breaking research in the fields of a) collaborating robots and human robot collaborative workplaces b) autonomous robotics and AI based task planning c) mobile robots and reconfigurable tooling, d) Digital Twins and Virtual Commissioning and e) Service Oriented Robotics Integration and Communication Architectures. To strengthen the EU production companies’ trust in utilizing advanced robotics, the vision of ODIN is: “to demonstrate that novel robot-based production systems are not only technically feasible, but also efficient and sustainable for immediate introduction at the shopfloor”. ODIN will achieve this vision through the implementation of Large Scale Pilots consisting of the following components: - Open Component (OC): A small footprint, small scale pilot instance allowing the development, integration and testing of cutting-edge technologies. - Digital Component (DC): A virtual instance of the pilot implementing an accurate Digital Twin representation that allows the commissioning, validation and control of the actual pilot - Industrial Component (IC): A full-scale instance of the pilot, integrating hardware (HW) and software (SW) modules from the Open and Digital components and operating under an actual production environment. - Networked Component (IC): An integration architecture with open interfaces allowing the communication of all robotics HW and control systems through safe and secure means. ODIN will demonstrate its result in 3 Large Scale Pilots in the automotive, white goods and aeronautic sectors.

The dynamics of global markets demand shorter product lifecycles and higher product variety, impacted by an increased volatility in demand. Traditional manufacturing systems are unsuitable to meet the new “think small” paradigm. They enable flexibility but at high operational complexity and for high volume operations to get lower cost production. To realise resilient factories and supply chains, it is mandatory to reduce complexity and cost of plug & produce modular manufacturing. MODUL4R envisions reliable, maintainable, affordable, (re)usable, and changeable SME-friendly autonomous modular factories and supply chains, able to manufacture new product in low-volumes and rapidly respond to unexpected events as well as the overall supply chain. MODUL4R proposes a holistic framework applicable both to new and existing manufacturing lines to achieve flexibility, rapid responsiveness, and sustainability. MODUL4R will be demonstrated in specialized mould manufacturing for the automotive sector, CPPS for flexible & modular assembly of PCBs, and tools manufacturing for the aerospace. MODUL4R focuses on 4 pillars, offering HW and SW components: Pillar 1: Resilience against changes in customer and societal demands and disruption on the supply chain Pillar 2: Modular technologies for flexible manufacturing operations Pillar 3: Simulation and interfaces to the Industrial Metaverse Pillar 4: Human centred technologies and upskilling The impact of MODUL4R for the EU Manufacturing industry, but also the society itself, can be summarised as follows: (i) Process ramp-up time (>20%), (ii) Speed in product shifting (>29%), (iii) Yield & CpK (>12% & >21%), (iv) OEE (>21%), (v) Part cost reduction (>15%) with over 41 MEUR ROI for the consortium, (vi) 408 new jobs, and (viii) help industry to reduce Energy consumption (>30%) through Automation of processes (>25%).
