This new approach has been influential in public policies through the design of “nudges”, which rely on variations in the architecture of the choice environment aimed at helping decision makers to overcome the psychological motivations that would lead to dominated decisions otherwise. The contribution of behavioral economics to the design of public policies goes far beyond the circumstances in which the decisions taken can be considered contrary to the interest of the decision maker, and ranges from a deeper understanding of decision-makers’ motivations and the role of ethical considerations in their decisions, to the role of information and emotions in the decision-making process. The objective of this network is to bring out a behavioral approach to public policies that takes full advantage of the lessons drawn from advances in behavioral sciences (economics, psychology, cognitive sciences and neuro sciences) about economic decision-making. To that aim, the network brings together leading research teams in behavioral economics which are highly complementary from the point of view of the fields of public intervention to which their work applies, and the behavioral sciences with which collaborations have been established. Thanks to this original combination of skills, the network will jointly offer a training at the PhD level supplementing the local training in behavioral economics already offered by each institution. A secondary aim of this project is to build on the training network to develop a joint research program on behavioural public policies between partner institutions, which will be initiated by common proposals submitted to European calls related to sustainability and the effectiveness of social policies.
