The experiments were conducted as part of the SmartSociety FET Open project, which aims to develop new ways of human-machine collaboration. They were jointly done by the partners of this proposal with DFKI being in charge of the technology and Southampton providing the experimental setting within their nursing school that puts hundreds of professional nurses and nurse candidates through elaborate training simulations each year. The experiments have shown that sensor-based activity recognition combined with novel interaction techniques can, in principle provide significant benefit to both the students and the trainers. They also generate significant interest within the health care community, which included both enthusiasms for the potential and sepsis on potential problems. In this project, we want to understand which parts of the experiments are suitable for short to mid-term transition into real life education practice, how to overcome the corresponding technical, regulatory and social hurdles and how the introduction of such systems could be financed.

However, although smaller or minority languages like Maltese are the ones to gain most from language technologies (LT), tools and resources for them are often scarce — in some cases non-existent which leads to a widening technology gap between large, well-resourced languages and smaller languages like Maltese. The overall goal of the "LT-BRIDGE" project hence is to integrate University of Malta's AI Department and Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology into the European research community in the area of AI-based language technologies by significantly strengthening its the research and networking capacities and reputation aiming to create a European-level Centre of Excellence in the this field in Malta (Widening Country) and thus closing the technology gap. Two leading European research organizations, the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and Dublin City University's ADAPT Centre (DCU) will work in order to help UM to attain this objective. The Science Strategy and corresponding research and innovation programme proposed by the LT-BRIDGE consortium will address the carefully selected and mutually-relevant research topics jointly shaping important new applied research areas. As a result the project will foster new young European level research teams in UM capable of carrying out competitive research in the priority scientific areas. The Innovation and Research Management capacity building programmes will allow UM to extend and improve its portfolio of services oriented towards the needs of national, regional and European public authorities, businesses and NGOs, as well.

It will be achieved by research profile adjusting and linking the central Georgian ICT research institute - Muskhelishvili Institute of Computational Mathematics (MICM), to the European AI research and innovation community. Two absolutely leading European research organizations (DFKI and INRIA) supported by the high-tech company EXOLAUNCH will support MICM in this endeavour. The Strategic Research and Innovation Programme (SRIP) designed by the partnership will provide the environment for the Georgian colleagues to get involved in the research projects of the European partners addressing a clearly delineated set of AI topics. Jointly, the partners will advance in capacity building and networking within the area of AI Methods and Tools for Human Activities Recognition and Evaluation, which also will contribute to strengthening core competences in such fundamental technologies as e.g. Machine (Deep) Learning. The results of the cooperation presented through the series of scientific publications and events will inform the European AI community about the potential of MICM and trigger new partnerships building, addressing e.g. Horizon Europe. The project will contribute to career development of a cohort of young researchers at MICM through joint supervision and targeted capacity building measures. Innovation and Research Administration and Management capacities of MICM will also be strengthen to allow the Institute to be better connected to the local, regional and European innovation activities. Using their extensive research and innovation networking capacities DFKI and INRIA will introduce MICM to the European AI research community by connecting to such networks as CLAIRE, ELLIS, ADRA, AI NoEs, etc.

Disinformation spreading threatens European democratic values and tackling it is a European level priority. As the amount of disinformation grows, AI and in particular language technologies have a crucial role in detecting disinformation. To meet the European goals, it is increasingly important to develop tools and methods for disinformation combating also for low resource languages. KInIT, the widening partner from Slovakia, has taken a leadership role in shaping the R&I landscape of Slovakia by boosting cross-sectorial, interdisciplinary, and international collaboration. The ambition of KInIT is to strengthen AI to combat disinformation, an area that especially in Slovak digital space contributes to the development of AI technologies and tools for low resource languages and growing awareness of online disinformation. To achieve scientific excellence of KInIT, the activities of the project aim to increase the research capacity and excellence of scientists at different career levels in multilingual and multimodal language technologies and trustworthy AI. Together with leading partners German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, Centre for Research and Technology Hellas and Copenhagen University, a joint Research project on claim matching as well as networking and mobility activities will be organised. Importantly, transfer of know-how on innovation and creativity for facilitating industry-academia collaboration and boosting the skills of the research managers and administrative staff will be part of the capacity building programme.
