HIV infection weakens a person’s ability to fight other infection. It can also affect other parts of the body. We have a theory that HIV affects the body’s ability to remove damaged parts of their cells. This removal and recycling of damaged parts of cells is called autophagy. This is a normal process that happens every day in our cells. Our study will look at the effect of age and HIV infection on autophagy. We will study three different groups. These are young patients without HIV, old patients without HIV, and old patients with HIV. Our study has three parts. The first part will look at the differences in the autophagy with age. The second part will look at what happens to autophagy with HIV infection. The third part will look at frailty in HIV. Frailty measures a person’s overall health and energy. It tells us about their ability to cope with stress. We hope to discover what happens with autophagy when we age. We also hope to discover what happens to autophagy with HIV. We hope that this may help treatment in the future.
