This project explores how families with and without parental intellectual disabilities navigate youth care and child protection services. The findings will reveal how families progress from preventive support to more intensive interventions, such as out-of-home placement, and identify when the risk of out-of-home placement is highest.

A key gap in our understanding of the causes and consequences of psychiatric disorders is the absence of a solid etiological model. An etiological model explains how symptoms of a psychiatric disorder come to co-occur, and how these symptoms relate to the causes and consequences of the disorder. Competing etiological models exist, like the biomedical model (a disease causes the symptoms), network model (symptoms cause other symptoms), reductionist models (underlying shared biology explains correlations between symptoms) a social model (symptoms co-occur in disadvantaged circumstances). The aforementioned models are hard to distinguish empirically, which hampers the development of effective treatment and interventions. My goal is to develop new methods to select the most appropriate etiological models, and apply these techniques to ADHD and MDD. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is a comprehensive framework for the formal analysis of multivariate data. SEM is capable of dealing with multivariate and longitudinal measures of psychopathology. However, SEM cannot distinguish correlation from causation. Genetic epidemiologists have successfully developed a quasi-experimental method to distinguish correlation from causation: Mendelian Randomization. In my VENI proposal I aim to integrate these two methods to define and examine? Competing etiological models of psychiatric disorders. Together with international collaborators I developed GenomicSEM. GenomicSEM allows one to fit competing etiological models of psychiatric disease based on the summary statistics derived from genome wide association studies (GWAS). The influx of GWAS data as Open Data allows the analysis of psychological symptoms concurrently with metabolites, proteins, structural, and functional brain measures in a single etiological model. By such analyses, my VENI research will further our understanding of complex etiology of psychiatric disorders and inform the future development of treatment and interventions.

De diverse en complexe gedrags- en beweegproblematiek van de leerlingen stelt bewegingsonderwijzers dikwijls voor de didactische vraag welke leermethode voor welke (groep) leerling(en) geschikt is om het bewegen te verbeteren. Zelfs ervaren bewegingsonderwijzers ondervinden daarbij handelingsverlegenheid: “Dit werkt niet voor deze leerling, wat nu?” Differentiëren met expliciete en impliciete leermethoden is hier belangrijk. Hoe meer en gedetailleerder de verbale uitleg over de bewegingsuitvoering, hoe explicieter de leermethode. Recent onderzoek toont dat de effectiviteit van expliciete leermethoden sterk van het verbale werkgeheugen afhangt, sterker dan bij impliciete leermethoden. De rol van het visueel-ruimtelijk werkgeheugen is onduidelijk. Of de leermethoden ook bij leerlingen in het speciaal (basis)onderwijs een verschil maken, en in hoeverre het verbale en/of visueel-ruimtelijke werkgeheugen dit voorspelt, is onbekend. Wel is bekend dat deze leerlingen een lager werkgeheugencapaciteit hebben, vooral visueel-ruimtelijk. De individuele verschillen zijn echter aanzienlijk. Wij onderzoeken de effectiviteit van expliciete -leerhulp met gedetailleerde uitleg- en impliciete leermethoden -leerhulp met beeldspraak- bij deze leerlingen en bepalen in hoeverre de effectiviteit wordt voorspeld door de capaciteit van het verbale en visueel-ruimtelijke werkgeheugen. De leerlingen oefenen het ballenslaan met een knuppel en het balanceren op een slackline. Dit onderzoek helpt bewegingsonderwijzers hun leermethoden binnen een klas groepsgewijs te differentiëren om alle leerlingen succes te laten opdoen. Kennisbenutting richt zich op implementatie van kennis over differentiëren in de opleiding van aankomende bewegingsonderwijzers, en bewustmaking van (ervaren) bewegingsonderwijzers hoe ze met leermethoden effectief differentiëren.

Current exoskeleton research is mostly focused on reducing human effort, while disregarding balance support. This is undesirable, as many individuals with mobility impairments have indeed reduced balance control. Here we will use data on balance recovery after perturbations to design a biomimetic exoskeleton controller that supports balance during walking. This controller will use both the feedback from ankle kinematics and feedback from center of mass velocity. We will test the controller using ankle exoskeletons in a novel perturbation experiment.
