Soils hold enormous amounts of carbon in the form or soil organic matter – only a small loss of this can exacerbate climate changing through increasing atmospheric CO2 levels. Recent insights show that interactions between plant roots and soil microbes are the key to the formation of stable soil organic matter, but we don’t know what the role is of different root systems. In field and greenhouse experiments we will test which plants are effectively collaborating with microbes, and how we can use these plants to increase soil carbon storage.

In dit voorstel worden de bestaande cohortonderzoeken in het onderwijs, PRIMA, PRIMA-VO en VOCL, geïntegreerd en op onderdelen vernieuwd tot een nieuw, langlopend cohortonderzoek, COOL 5-18 geheten. In COOL 5-18 worden driejaarlijkse metingen in PO en VO gecombineerd met gegevens uit de onderwijsnummerbestanden. Met de opbrengsten worden het verloop van de schoolloopbanen, de cognitieve en sociale ontwikkelingen en de individuele leercondities van leerlingen in primair, secundair en tertiair onderwijs vastgesteld, inclusief onderlinge causale relaties en de invloed van factoren in de leef- en leeromgeving. Door de longitudinale opzet kunnen we bovendien meten welke levensfase-, periode- en cohorteffecten binnen en tussen de cohorten optreden.

ODISSEI is a data infrastructure that brings together existing data from the social sciences and economics and combines them with new data from a wide range of sources such as wearable devices, social media or administrative records, and provides the computational infrastructure to conduct complex and ground-breaking analysis. It makes its data and infrastructure available to scientists from many different disciplines and the subsequent analysis is widely used by government departments and research institutes to help better understand societal challenges and how to address them. By linking and enriching data with contextual information, developing innovative analytic and presentation tools, and offering world class, secure and ethical data management facilities, ODISSEI enhances the position of the Dutch social sciences as global leaders. In this application, we are asking for €500,000 to ensure that ODISSEI continues to grow, attract new partners and investment, and stay at the cutting edge of innovations in the social sciences. The funds will be used to extend and develop the ODISSEI data platform, a unique facility that is a global first in the field. It is the first infrastructure in the world to combine scientific data collections, administrative records, contextual (time and environmental) data and high-performance computing facilities in one environment, opening up new possibilities for social scientists. Some of the funding will also be used to strengthen the coordination of ODISSEI as it continues to expand and moves towards a sustainable future that serves a diverse and policy orientated community.

Nederland heeft een uitstekende bereikbaarheid. Toch geldt dit niet voor iedereen in dezelfde mate. Een beperkt aanbod van transportmiddelen in combinatie met sociaaleconomische achterstand en/of gezondheidsbeperkingen en een grote afstand tot voorzieningen kunnen leiden tot een verhoogd risico op vervoersarmoede, leidend tot sociale uitsluiting en uiteindelijk een lager welzijn. Er ontbreekt echter nog inzicht in: 1. hoe en in welke mate kwalitatieve factoren (bijvoorbeeld onveiligheid, culturele factoren of gebrek aan vaardigheden) in combinatie met objectieve factoren voor specifieke groepen bijdragen aan vervoersarmoede; 2. in welke mate vervoersarmoede optreedt wat hiervan de sociale en welzijnseffecten zijn. Dit project (Mobimon) beoogt daarom een meer volledig inzicht te genereren in de determinanten en gevolgen van vervoersarmoede in Nederland, om zo een meer gedifferentieerde benadering in het oplossen van vervoersarmoede mogelijk te maken. De doelstelling van dit project is een kwantitatieve meetmethode voor vervoersarmoede te ontwikkelen die in staat is om kwalitatieve factoren te meten die de ervaren transportarmoede bepalen en de effecten op participatie, eenzaamheid en welzijn te meten. Deze meetmethode zal gebaseerd worden op een literatuurstudie en focus groepen met experts. Vervolgens zal de meetmethode gevalideerd worden door middel van een survey. Analyse van de verzamelde surveydata zal eerste inzichten geven in de mate van vervoersarmoede van verschillende groepen mensen.

Platform workers provide services through online platforms such as Uber (taxis), Helpling (cleaning) and care.com (homecare). Platforms provide flexibility and transparency, but workers lack social protection and income security. The project contributes to new regulations for platform work with the aim to provide platform workers more social protection. Public values such as non-discrimination, privacy and cybersecurity will also be taken into account. The project will develop digital tools to support government in the effective enforcement of regulations regarding platform work.
