Laser drilling is a process commonly used for machining aerospace engine parts to cool. However, current laser processes will not achieve the shaped holes on materials coated with the assurance of quality, reproducibility and durability required for future engines. The project ULTRA (Laser Machining of Cooling Systems in Aeronautic) aims to make a significant advance in the process of laser drilling through two successive steps: a technological one made with the design of an adaptive drilling head combined with a process control to ensure the quality of drilling during the process, and a second scientific step in which the experiments made possible by the head of drilling are realized. They concern the mechanisms of laser absorption and the influence of the holes geometries and damage on the working parts properties. This project is interested by two sorts of materials: single crystal superalloys (AM1) and Cobalt alloys (KCN22W) coated or not by thermal barrier. This project is divided into 4 workpackages. In addition to the coordination, the workpackage 1 concerns for all fundamental studies on laser drilling in percussion as well, that trepanation and ablation. This workpackage is divided into three complementary and fundamental studies. They concern the absorption of the laser at the local level, the interface design, and the effects of the microstructure and the hole geometry on the mechanical properties of the parts. The objective of this workpackage is to deepen knowledge of the internal phenomena of the drilling at interaction regimes of medium and low flows, in order to control their impact on microstructure and properties of simple structures. Ultimately, it is also extracting the laws of behavior of different materials and assessing their influence on the working parts. The technological step is achieved with the workpackage 2. This is an innovative drilling head, allowing the adaptation of the optical properties of laser associate of a process control during the drilling. And last, the workpackage 3 relates to the development and the control of the process with the new drilling configurations. This workpackage is the implementation and evaluation of scientific and technological results realized in workpackages 1 and 2. For the manufacturers, the aim is to achieve an industrial transfer and evaluate technically and economically innovative solutions relevant to the objectives of development of products. ULTRA will provide a set of generic knowledge, unique tools and expertise to the industrial users for increasing their competitiveness and proposing innovative solutions to the development of engines of the future. The range of partners in the consortium includes a manufacturer of laser source (Lasag: Swatch Group Switzerland equity capital partner) two industrial users of Aeronautic (Snecma: Safran Group, CRMA: Air France Group), an SME whose the core activity is the business laser instrumentation (Laser Metrology) and two research organizations complement this range: ARMINES for its expertise in aerospace materials, and PIMMS (coordinator) for its unique expertise in laser drilling processes.
