CEPEC herbarium - Centro de Pesquisas do Cacau - Herbário Virtual REFLORA

Abstract

The Centro de Pesquisas do Cacau Herbarium (CEPEC), affiliated with CEPLAC (Executive Commission for the Cocoa Cultivation Plan), was established in 1964 to study and document the flora of southern Bahia and parts of northern Espírito Santo—regions where cocoa plantations (Theobroma cacao L.) were being implemented. After a decade, the herbarium's collection began to expand, and by the late 1970s, it was indexed in the Index Herbariorum, housing approximately 35,000 specimens. Today, the CEPEC Herbarium holds around 160,000 specimens, making it one of the largest herbaria in northeastern Brazil. It is particularly notable for its extensive collections from Atlantic Forest remnants, especially in the states of Bahia and Espírito Santo.
