Abstract

O Herbário ICN teve início em 1937, através da coleção de Alarich R. Schultz, pesquisador e professor de Botânica da então Faculdade de Filosofia da Universidade do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Atualmente o ICN está vinculado ao Departamento de Botânica/Instituto de Biociências e seu acervo conta com mais de 203 mil exemplares registrados, abrangendo Angiospermas, Gimnospermas, Monilófitas, Briófitas, Algas, Fungos e Líquens, além da coleção de DNA. Mais de 160 mil exemplares já estão informatizados e vários grupos já tem imagens disponibilizadas. Destaca-se a presença de 369 typus de plantas (e mais 803 paratypus), em sua grande maioria, da flora do Estado. O Herbário ICN faz parte da Rede de Herbários do Rio Grande do Sul e do Brasil.
