MBML Herbarium - Museu de Biologia Mello Leitão - Herbário Virtual REFLORA

Abstract

The collections of the National Institute of the Atlantic Forest (Instituto Nacional da Mata Atlântica – INMA), formerly known as the Professor Mello Leitão Biology Museum (Museu de Biologia Professor Mello Leitão – MBML) until February 2014, were established alongside the creation of the MBML in 1949. The INMA houses a biological collection, with a focus on the Atlantic Forest biota, particularly from the state of Espírito Santo, including faunal specimens across five groups of vertebrates (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals), invertebrates(crustaceans and insects), and flora (herbarium). The MBML Herbarium was founded by the naturalist Augusto Ruschi, who incorporated his personal collection and plant specimens donated by the Espírito Santo State Department of Agriculture, Lands, and Colonization in the 1950s. Currently (2024), the herbarium holds approximately 57,000 specimens, with 2.08% being nomenclatural types. The primary purpose of the INMA botanical collection is to document the flora of the Atlantic Forest. The collection includes fungi, lichens, algae, bryophytes, ferns, lycophytes, gymnosperms, and angiosperms. Specimens are preserved in liquid medium (flowers and algae samples), as herbarium sheets (dried branches with leaves, flowers, and fruits), in a xylotheque (wood samples), and in a carpotheque (dry fruit specimens).
